Jackson gazed at the boy. “I remember you. You were the one who told me where that inn was, are you not?”

Adam nodded. “I did, milord. I saw the bad man take you.” He puffed out his chest. “And I helped milady to find you.”

“You are a brave lad,” said Jackson slowly. “And I shall make sure you are well rewarded for your courage.”

Adam looked as pleased as punch. “I am at your service always, milord. It has been an interesting night.” Suddenly, he yawned loudly. “But I am a bit tired now.”

They all laughed.

“You shall come with us in the carriage, Adam,” said Patricia, gazing at him fondly. “We shall find your mother and then you are both coming home with us. You shall not sleep on the street tonight. A warm bed awaits you both at our home.”

Adam smiled wearily. The boy looked like he was going to drop where he stood. “That sounds better than any gold coin, milady. Thank you. Mam will be very pleased.”
