“Harrison—”

Another incessant knock interrupts us, and Elle surges up, splashing water over the lip of the tub.

“I guess we need to get ready to leave. I don’t want any trouble with the organizers,” she says quietly. “I need the money.”

“So that was all this was? Fucking for money?” I demand, angry at her, angry at myself for building a romance where there wasn’t one.

“Yes, Harrison. That is exactly what it was. You didn’t come here last night to bid onme. You came here for the sex, and I came here for the money. I think we both got what we wanted and then some, but now it’s done.” Her voice loses most of its heat as she steps out of the bath.

“Okay, sure,” I reply, handing her a towel before leaving the bathroom and closing the door.

I’ll bide my time, if it’s the organizers she’s worried about, I’ll make a plan, but I’m not leaving without her.

* * *

I’m going to have to leave without her.

Elle was right. She can’t leave with me, her bodyguard is making sure of that. He is by her side like a hawk once we exit the room together.

I try talking to management about having Elle drive back with me, but I’m told that is explicitly against their safety rules and that if I try to contact Miss Cartwright without her express consent, I won’t be able to attend the auction next year.

As if I want to come back again.

What I want is Elle, not an anonymous fuck.

So, here I am, waiting by the car with Jared, waiting for Elle to come out so I can at least give her my card. So what if I gave them stalker vibes—am I being stalkerish?

“You know you’re breaking every rule. You’re not supposed to catch feelings for the people you fuck at the auction, Harrison,” Jared says from behind the wheel of his silver BMW Z8.

“I don’t care. She’s not just a one-night stand. She’s more—”

“Of course she is. You paid five hundred thousand dollars for her,for one night. Don’t confuse what happens here, Harrison,” Jared says his tone short, and I see his knuckles are white holding on to the steering wheel

“Are you angry with me?”

“Not at all, son,” Jared says sarcastically. “I vouched for you, and now you’re harassing the acquisitions. You won’t be able to come back next year—”

“I don’t want to come back next year. I just want Elle. I’ve always only wanted Elle,” I say, defeated, shoving my hands into my pockets and kicking the gravel at my feet.

“Well, then you better go get her. Isn’t that your dream girl heading to the minivan?”

I look up. The only part of her I recognize is her blonde hair behind the broody bodyguard.

I’m not going to let him stop me. They said I could talk to her if she gave her consent. Pushing away from the car, I stride, determined, toward them.

“Sir, will I have to restrain you?” the hulking man asks.

Elle’s blue eyes meet mine from behind his back. “Harrison, wh—”

“Can I ask you something, Elle?” I say, looking at the bodyguard, getting my fucking consent.

“Yeah, sure,” she mumbles, and the bodyguard moves to the right so I can talk to her.

“I know what this was, but I want you to take my card. Call me … whenever. If you ever need anything, okay, angel?” I clench my fist to keep myself from touching her, holding the card out to her with my other hand, wanting to demand she take it.

“Okay, champ,” she says, stepping out from behind the cockblocker and taking the card before placing a chaste kiss on my cheek, then quickly turning away and heading toward the waiting van.

Even miserable at not getting what I want, I can’t help but watch her ass as she walks away, only this time it’s enclosed in faded blue jeans. I’ve got it bad, and only once she disappears from sight do I turn and get into the car with Jared.
