“I suppose not. That would have required lifting your eyes from your tiptoes occasionally.”

His dig hits the mark today. The world is intent on making me see what a hermit I am. Everyone got the memo, even Zale Devar.

“Are you coming to the Lunar Club tonight?”

“Why?” He sits in an armchair on the other side of the fire.

I frown. “Why would you come? I don’t know, I assumed you were invited.”

“I meant, why do you care if I’m showing up.” His tone makes me think of a teacher explaining basics to a particularly slow child.

“I was making conversation.” I’m not particularly good at it, but Zale’s apparently worse.

“Mmkay. So long as that’s all. I don’t poach pretty faces from my friends, tempting though they can be.”

I think my entire head just caught on fire. “I—I wasn’t…” I mutter, uncertain. “I’m not—”

“Interested?” His sinful mouth curves up. “You’re gay, I take it.”

Being so full of himself should be a turn off, but guys who look like Zale Devar can afford a degree of sanguinity. He wields his beauty as well as any weapon.

“I’m not gay.”

“Ah. In love, then.”

I choke on my own saliva. “Absolutely fucking not.”

Zale chuckles. “The lady doth protest too much.” He leans in toward me. “Let me tell you a secret, Frejr. No one can resist me. I need sex to survive, so my kind has evolved to appeal to every other creature.” It’s not exactly a secret, there are many rumors to that effect, but I doubt he confesses as much to everyone. “Even goddesses would fall at my feet if I wished them to. There are few exceptions on Xhera.”

His clear blue eyes bore into mine and lock, not letting go. I don’t breathe. I don’t even think.

I can tell he’s loving this. Holding me under his power amuses him greatly. I think I hate him a little. I’d still kiss him if he asked. Then, I’d punch his face for forcing my hand—or rather, lips. I don’t want him, but Iwouldif he wished it.

Zale leans back on his seat, releasing me. “The one exception is men and women in love—or not interested in my sex, naturally.”

I shake my head. “I’m not in love with anyone. Not even a little bit.”

“You haven’t completely fallen yet, that’s true. I could fill you with desire if I set out to.” He shoots me a cocky grin. “Don’t fret. You’re safe from me.”

“Good. Keep me out of your power plays.” I’m not naive enough to think this display of strength was anything other than a muscle flex.

“Sorry, sweetling. Just checking if I have lost my touch.” He winks. “Apparently not.”

Whelp, I’m glad it’s time to get out. I run from this specific predator, only to get into the hovercraft of another one.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

THE SEA

Reiks leans against his shiny hovering car, in a smart black jacket stitched with gold trim at the lapels and collar. He makes me feel underdressed; which was exactly the look I going for.

His nostrils flare. “How was Zale?”

“Seriously?” I huff. “You’re more of a freak than I am. Did you smell him or something?”

He opens the craft and waves me in. “I’ve spent enough time around him to know how he operates,” he replies as I climb into the back of the vehicle. Reiks slides in at my right and shuts the door. “When he’s using his pheromone thing, you can feel it in the air for a few minutes. It’s like static, but colder.”

“Pheromones,” I muse. That’s how he works his way into any panties he’d like to explore.
