“Fucking smug bastard.” Mahoney swung, and his fist went right through Brayden. The more terrifying thing? Brayden never even noticed. Didn’t flinch or move.

Me, I gaped. Fuck. Guess I was on my own with Detective Crazy. “What do you want from me?”

“I want Mahoney.”

“Mahoney’s dead.”

“I know he is. Where’s his spirit?”

“Ghosts aren’t real.”

“Don’t fucking lie to me. Where is he?”

My sassy reply? “Standing right behind you.”

Brayden whirled and brandished his gun as if that would work against a ghost. “Where? I can’t see him.”

Mahoney’s frustration pulled his lip into a snarl as none of his blows landed.

“He’s right in front of you,” I announced. “Looking pretty pissed.”

“You don’t seem surprised by his presence.” The gun whirled to aim at me. “How long have you been communicating with Mahoney?”

“A while.”

“How. Long?”

“Since the attack.”

“And what has he said?”

“That he’s innocent.”

Brayden snorted. “And you believe him?”

“Why would a dead man lie?”

“To gain your trust so you’d lower your guard.”

“Don’t listen to him,” Mahoney whispered behind me. “He’s trying to get in your head.”

“Why would a ghost need me to trust him?”

“How else would he possess your body?”

CHAPTER26

Maybe I shouldn’t have laughed. After all, Brayden believed what he accused me of.

“I am not possessed.”

“My surveillance says otherwise.”

I blinked as I digested his words. “You’ve been spying on me?”

“Since you bought the place.”

“Why would you even care?”
