Bang, rattle.“Allie, I need you to answer.”

“Coming!” Someone appeared rather impatient. Maybe he finally had more than twenty minutes to hang out for once. I forwent a hairbrush but snared a piece of gum to chomp on my way to the door. The college toothbrush of champions.

Hoping my hair didn’t appear as if rats had abandoned it looking for upgraded digs, I opened the door and offered my most winsome smile. “Hey, handsome.”

My greeting did not erase the scowl from Brayden’s face. “Can I come in?”

“Well, duh. Of course, you can.” I stepped aside. “What’s up? You look like someone pissed in your last bowl of cereal.”

“Listen, Allie, this isn’t actually a social call. I need to ask you some questions.”

“About?”

“Where were you last night?”

“In bed. Alone because you were busy.” Yup, I blamed him for that. If he’d come by like I’d texted, I wouldn’t have had to flirt with the fake Mahoney.

“I’m being serious.”

“So am I. Where else would I be?”

“Riding a certain motorcycle.”

“Oh, yeah. I got the bike going and took her for a small spin.”

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

“Look at you, Mr. Rules all of a sudden. I know, I should have waited to get a plate and a helmet, but I couldn’t resist. I didn’t go far, and nothing happened.”

“You call confronting one of your assailants nothing?”

“How…?” Rather than keep asking, I lifted my chin. I wasn’t going to deny anything. “Yeah, I did run into one of my attackers. And I’m sorry, but the second I saw him, I snapped.”

“What were you thinking?” he yelled.

A part of me understood that he worried. Another part did not like his tone.

My hand hit my hip, his only warning before I laid into him. “Don’t you fucking yell at me unless it’s to say thank you. After all, unlike you, I managed to at least get the name of the guy who attacked me.”

His lips turned down. “Have you told anyone else about running into your assailant? Then again, I’m not sure if it matters given the witnesses.”

A frown creased my brow. “You’re not making sense.”

“People saw what you did, Allie.”

I confronted my abuser. How dare he act as if I were in the wrong? “So what if I confronted Sawyer? He deserved it. Every last bit.”

Brayden gaped at me. “I can’t believe you said that.”

“Seriously? I can’t believe you don’t think he deserved it. The guy held me down for his buddy to rape. I think I’m perfectly entitled to curse him out. And I won’t apologize for scaring him so bad he pissed his pants. That’s not a crime.”

“No, but killing him is.”

CHAPTER21

It tookme a second to filter what Brayden had said. “Hold your fucking mustangs. Are you saying Kyle Sawyer is dead?”

“We’re still waiting on confirmation of his identity since none was found on the body.”
