“No offense, but given the accusations against you, you really should think of changing it.”

“Anything else, babycakes?”

I winced. “Ew. What the fuck kind of name is that?”

“Don’t you like it?”

“No. My name is Allie, short for Alyssa.”

“Too nice. If you’re going to ride, you’ll need something else. Maybe Fiery Vixen.”

Me, a fiery vixen? I would dare any woman not to feel pleasure at the sensual way he gazed upon me. The smoldering interest. The way his hands actually felt as if they tugged my waist, drawing me close, the weight of them heavy. Claiming.

I glanced up at him. His gaze met mine. Then dropped to my lips. His head lowered for a kiss, and the strangest thought hit me. Did making out with the imaginary Mahoney count as masturbation?

Before his mouth connected, I shoved to give myself space. “Not happening.”

As I walked away, Mahoney murmured, “It will.”

CHAPTER20

Mahoney’s promisegave me tingles. How sexually bereft was I to be turned on by what amounted to my imagination?

As I pulled back my comforter, Mahoney said, “Who is Kyle Sawyer?”

“A lowlife.” I eyed him suspiciously. “Where did you hear that name? Were you reading my private text messages?”

Rather than reply, he frowned. “This Kyle Sawyer scares you. Why?”

“He doesn’t,” I lied. The mention of him killed my desire, and I inwardly shook. Facing down my attacker, I’d been full of adrenaline. Now that it had worn off, a chill filled my limbs.

With a shiver, I crawled into my bed and pulled up the covers. A second later, Blade skirted around Mahoney to bound onto the bed and squash me. The bed squeaked as it moved an inch and vibrated a little bit, but the sturdy frame held.

Mahoney glowered at the footboard. “That fucker hurt you.”

“He did. Not as bad as his friend, Joey, though. Good thing your old bike fell on me the night they attacked. It might have literally saved my life.”

“I remember you needing help.” He frowned.

“No, you don’t, because you weren’t there.” I’d been all alone then, and despite the figment talking to me, was alone now.

Rather than reply, Mahoney turned from me. “Are you still seeing that detective?”

“Brayden? Yes. He’s just been really busy with work. There’s a serial killer in town, using the same three blades as in a previous set of murders.” I stared hard at him.

A snorting noise erupted. “You’re still convinced it’s me when you should be worried about the fact that if it’s not, then who is it? And are you next?”

My lips flattened.“Don’t bother trying to scare me. It’s unlikely I’m in danger since I don’t fit the profile.

“And what’s this supposed profile?”

“Ten years ago, the killer went after scum. Folks no one cared about because they were foul. One of the newer cases involved a cop.”

“Maybe it was a bad cop.”

“Maybe.” My mind mulled over the two old cases that didn’t jibe with any of the rest. Why had those two seemingly innocent people died in the initial murder spree? Did they have a secret life nobody had caught on to?

“Worried about that cop you’re dating?”
