“Going to make sure you get the justice you deserve.”

I’d call Brayden the moment I got home. Maybe he’d videotape the arrest for me. Give me closure.

Hopefully, this Sawyer fucker didn’t try to leave town. Didn’t matter. If necessary, I’d find him again. Don’t ask me where the certainty came from.

Elation filled me for the whole ride home. Once I’d put the bike away in the garage for the night—after wiping it down and putting a blanket over it to protect it from dust—I went home. Blade barely lifted his head from the couch.

“Good thing I wasn’t a burglar, huh?”

He farted in reply. Effective and might just scare off any wannabe thieves given the noxious smell.

I put my dog into the yard to do his business, and went to text Brayden, only to pause.

How should I explain where I’d gotten Kyle Sawyer’s name? Which led to a lightbulb I’m-so-dumb moment. Dammit, why didn’t I ask Sawyer where to find his buddy, Joey?

Blame being so frazzled by power. Being in control empowered.

I gnawed my lower lip and stuck to a partial truth as I texted.

Hey, took the bike out for a short spin and came across some junkies under the bridge spanning the train tracks. Saw one of the guys who attacked me. Name of Kyle Sawyer in case you’re bored and want to check it out.I re-read what I’d typed so far and grimaced. So romantic. What could I add?Or you could come over.

Way too forward. I erased it.

I sighed and looked away for a second. My adrenaline faded fast, leaving me tired and lonely. As if he heard, Blade wandered to me by the back door and leaned against my leg.

Okay, so not fully alone, but my dog wasn’t the same as having someone who could actually hold me and tell me everything would be okay. I typed a new message and hit send before I could change my mind.

Feeling a little shook and wouldn’t mind some company.

The honest truth. I didn’t exactly get what I wished for.

“How was the ride?” a deep voice drawled.

Mahoney was back.

CHAPTER19

I blamedstress for my sudden hallucination because I knew for a fact that I hadn’t fallen asleep.

“The ride was good. Great, actually.” Liberating.

“Acceleration?”

“Decent, although I didn’t push for the first run. I took the bike on an easy cruise.”

Mahoney nodded in approval. “Cautious the first time is good. Wish I could have gone with you.”

“Shame the motorcycle only seats one.”

“We’d both fit if you got close and held on tight for the ride.” Mahoney winked in an obvious flirt.

I wasn’t about to play romantic games with a figment of my imagination.

“I’m not crazy.” A mantra I repeated aloud as I walked back into the house, ignoring the man who followed.

“Only crazy people talk to themselves,” he remarked.

“No shit,” I muttered, kicking off my shoes.
