AVERY

“This is Nero. Leave a message.”

BEEP.

I slowly lower the phone, feeling a weird sense of relief that he didn’t pick up. I don’t have to say the words out loud just yet, the truth that’s just ripped my life apart.

Miles is dead. He killed himself. Nothing will ever be the same again.

“Avery?” One of Nero’s guys hangs back, by the doorway. Looking freaked out now he’s heard the news. “Do you know…? His family, I mean. Should someone…?”

“I know his mother,” I reply dully. “I’ll let her know.”

“OK. Cool. Uh… I’m sorry,” he offers. “I know you guys were close.”

Close.

I stare at the wall. That’s one way of putting it. I’ve been in love with Miles for years now, I dreamed that one day we would be together, but we never shared so much as a single kiss.

Now we never will.

I look down, at the crumpled note in my hand. The only thing Miles left me, the only explanation for his unthinkable act. The words blur behind my tears, but I already know them by heart. Branded on my soul.

I fucked up. I got in too deep with Sebastian’s card game, I tried covering from the accounts, I thought I could win it back again, but I failed. I let you down. I’m sorry.

The card game. Sebastian Wolfe’s high-stakes poker match, I’ve heard people talk about it—and the man who rules it with an iron fist. He’s a billionaire hedge fund owner, adored and feared across the globe. Untouchable.

Or so he thinks.

But Sebastian Wolfe will pay. I’m going to destroy him, no matter what it takes.

Or I’ll die trying.
