“But I can get him back,” Chase continues. “I can fix this. See, once he thinks the Kovacks killed you, he’ll do what needs to be done. He’ll remember what matters and defend the Baretti name. The stupid détente will be called off, and we can wipe out our rivals for good. The old way,” he vows.

“It was you, wasn’t it?” I realize. “You sabotaged the elevator at the construction site. And you tried to get Nero to believe it was the Kovacks.”

I’m putting the pieces together now, and I feel sick. Nero trusts Chase like a brother. He has no idea what the guy’s been plotting behind his back.

Chase turns toward the door, and the thought of being alone in this isolated place makes me feel like a fist is squeezing my stomach. “Where are you going?” I blurt, afraid.

“I need to get back to Nero. He’ll need his lieutenant for the upcoming war.” Chase says it with satisfaction. “Don’t worry, Princess. I’ll be back for you.”

He slams the door behind him, and a moment later, I hear the sound of the car engine. He drives away.

Silence.

I swallow hard. There’s no way I can be here waiting when he gets back. The man has lost grip on reality, and there’s no saying what he’ll do. He’s already killed one person to put this plan into action.

Who knows when he’ll decide to get rid of me, too?

I start trying to loosen my binds, but it’s useless. The ropes are too tight. So, I wait another few minutes, just to be safe, and then I start yelling for help.

“Hello?” I cry. “Is anyone out there? HELP!”

I know it’s a long shot. I didn’t see any signs of life nearby, and Chase wouldn’t have picked this cabin to hide me unless he was sure I wouldn’t be found.

But still, I scream. I yell, and shriek until my voice is hoarse, echoing into the trees.

No response. Nobody’s coming.

I sink back, exhausted now. Darkness is falling outside the cabin, and I can’t tell how much time has passed, but I must have been here for hours. I look around, for something I can use to get through the ropes, but the place is bare. There’s nothing but me, and the rickety chair, and the hard wooden floor.

This is going to hurt.

I hold my breath as I hurl myself to the side, knocking the chair to the ground with a bang that makes my bones vibrate. The chair shakes, but it stays intact. So, I haul myself up, and do it again.

And again.

Every time sends pain shooting through my body, but I don’t stop. I’ll break my own bones all night if it means smashing this chair and getting free.

I have to get out of here and warn Nero. I know, the minute he thinks that the Kovacks have taken me, he’ll unleash hell on earth to get me back.

I have to get free before it’s too late.
