“I need to know that you’re being safe, especially with Blaise now living here.”

“Yes, Mom, we’re being safe.” I rubbed my sweaty palms together. “I’m on the pill.”

This time, Mom’s eyes widened. “Since when?”

“Since …”We started fucking so much that I was popping Plan B like it was gum.“Since a couple weeks ago. Maddie brought me to her gynecologist. I didn’t want to bother you because I know how busy you are.”

And it was awkward as fuck.

“Sweetheart, if I had known you were seeing Blaise earlier, I would’ve brought you.” She rubbed a hand over her forehead. “I should’ve brought you. I didn’t know that you were dating. You never showed much interest in boys before Blaise.”

“Yeah, well”—I scratched the back of my head—“that’s sorta his fault.”

Hell, he’d scared away Jim. I wouldn’t doubt it if he had done that before with other guys.

“Anyway …” I shook my head, trying to get off the topic of birth control. “That’s not what I wanted to talk to you about.” I played with the hem of my shirt and wished that we’d actually had privacy instead of Mateo and Blaise screaming at the video game in the other room. “This is more … serious.”

“Oh God,” Mom said dramatically. “Are you preg—”

“No! I told you that I’m on birth control.”

Mom placed a hand over her heart and closed her eyes. “Good, but you know birth control isn’t one hundred percent effective. There’s always a chance that you can still get pregnant with it. And I’m not ready to be anabuela. I’m still raising you and Mateo.”

“Don’t worry,” I said, mind wandering back to the night that I’d told Blaise I had started birth control.

He had begun talking about how he’d be a good father to our son and provide, and I’d bet he’d probably—

No.

I cannot think about that right now.

“Listen, Mom,” I said to get us back on track. “I need to ask you about Blaise’s parents.”

“What about them?”

Again, I swallowed hard and averted my gaze to the ground. While I didn’t want to bring this up at all, I couldn’t get it out of my head. What if Mom really slept with Blaise’s father while working for him? What if she didn’t want to and was forced? But what if she had wanted it?

It wasn’t any of my business, but … Blaise’s mother had planted a seed.

What if her husband had been gaslighting her for years, making her out to seem crazy when maybe it really did happen? I didn’t trust her, but that didn’t mean I trusted Blaise’s father either. They were both fucked up, proven by the way they treated their son.

“His mom said something to me the other day,” I whispered, tears building in my eyes.

She had done more than onlysay something; she had nearly ripped fistfuls of my hair out while screaming at me. But Mom didn’t need to know that.

Mom furrowed her brows, eyes widening. “What did she say? What’s wrong?”

Before I could stop myself, I moved closer to her, wrapped my arms around her torso, and rested my head on her shoulder. Whatever happened, happened. It was in the past, but I wanted to know. Because if they’d had sex while I was a kid, then Mateo …

I didn’t want it to be true.

“What’d she say, Vera?” Mom said, gently rubbing my back. “You’re scaring me.”

“She said that … you and Blaise’s father …”

I didn’t have to say anything more for Mom to tense slightly. My stomach twisted and turned, bile rising in my throat.

I don’t want it to be true. I don’t want it to be true. I don’t want it to be true.
