A part of me is still too scared to touch him, so I curl my fingers around his shirt. He holds me until my breathing eases.

“It’s late,” he says, stepping away. “Aren’t you hungry?”

“Yeah. Have you had breakfast?”

“I haven’t been inside the kitchen yet,” Julian says with a chuckle. His beautiful eyes crinkle into glistening slits as he grins mischievously. “Want to get some coffee?”

I can’t help but smile back. “Sure,” I quip.

He leads the way out of the attic and then down the corridor.

“Did you talk to Caleb?” I ask. “Did he like what I cooked last night?”

Julian turns around and smiles broadly. “He loved it. You should’ve seen his face when he was eating the steak. He thought I’d cooked dinner.” He chuckles like it was the funniest shit.

“So, he’s okay with me staying here?”

“Yeah. He’s okay with it for now.”

I follow him inside the kitchen and struggle not to cringe. Dirty plates, dishes, and empty bottles of wine litter the table. Neither Julian nor his alphas bothered cleaning up after dinner last night.

“Ugh! Caleb didn’t clean in here again,” Julian says with a disappointed huff. “He always does this.” He rounds on me with wide eyes. “Do you see what I have to deal with? Just because I’m the omega, they expect me to do all the chores around here.”

I chuckle. “People think omegas love household chores,” I say, thinking of Delilah who loathes doing dishes or cooking. In fact, she always stays away from the kitchen.

An ache goes through me as I think of her.

Like always, my parents chose her over me. I know it’s not really her fault. It’s our parents who doted on her. She got the best of everything while I was left to scramble for her scraps.

“Iris?” Julian is shaking my shoulder gently. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I mumble, looking away.

He hooks a finger under my chin and makes me look up at him. His violet eyes search mine. “Did you just think of Delilah?”

Tears burn my eyes but I refuse to let them fall.

“It’s okay to cry,” he says, pulling me into a tight hug. “There’s no shame in it. No one can hurt us as much as our parents. I understand, Wildflower.”

I close my eyes and greedily inhale his intoxicating scent.

“Do you know how to make brownies and cupcakes?” he suddenly whispers in my ear.

Stepping away, I stare up at him. “You want a sugary breakfast treat?”

“Caleb and Raiden ate bran flakes and milk at breakfast along with their disgusting protein smoothies.” He makes a gagging face that makes me laugh.

“That explains the blender,” I say, gesturing at the giant glass tumbler in the sink that’s lined with green slime.

“Ugh! They’ve left those for me to clean.”

“We deserve a treat, don’t we?” I ask.

He bumps my shoulder and grins conspiratorially.

“Let’s see if we’ve got all the ingredients,” I say, moving toward the cabinet where I’d found flour yesterday.

Among the bags of flour, I find jars of sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
