I take a sip of my coffee and find it’s gone cold.Ugh, it’s too sweet as well, I think, taking another gulp.

The restaurant starts prepping for dinner. My shift doesn’t start for another three hours, so I settle down in a corner and open my laptop.

It’s time for me to work on my second job.

I make commissions on the codes I write for the manager of a tech company.

This is another reason I love working for Ethan. He’s my best friend and supports my dream of becoming a software programmer.

With the money I’ve earned over the past year, I just need to keep at it for another six months to fund college and rent a small place so I can move out of my parents’ house.

The thought brings a smile to my face.

Taking a deep breath, I open my emails and get to work.

It’s past ten P.M. when I’m finally done with my day.

“Want me to give you a ride home?” Ethan asks as I stuff my uniform inside my backpack.

“Nah. I need to go home early tonight. Delilah was being weird this morning. I want to catch her for a chat before she goes to bed.”

He’s struggling not to roll his eyes. “Why do you even have to care?” he asks.

“She’s my sister. Also, why do you have to be a jerk about her all the time? Do you secretly love her or something?”

“Yeah, right.” This time he rolls his eyes. “I know an omega like her would never even consider a guy like me. She wouldn’t mate with someone who wasn’t a high-ranking official or at least related in some way to the royals.”

He huffs out a breath, looking suddenly serious. “Being an omega doesn’t automatically earn her someone’s respect or love. When the haze of hormones disappears, people will see her true nature.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“That it’s better to mate with a beta than an omega who has her head stuck in the clouds.”

“You’re weird too,” I say with a chuckle. “Everyone wants to mate with an omega.”

“Not me.”

I shake my head and grab my backpack. Moving close, I give Ethan a quick one-arm hug. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

He grins. “Yeah. See you tomorrow.”

Instead of waiting for the bus, I call for a cab.

My ride arrives within ten minutes and I’m on my way home. I settle in the backseat and plug my earphones to listen to my favorite playlist.

Since Delilah’s home, Mom’s bound to have cooked an amazing meal. Most days I ate leftovers at the restaurant but tonight, I’m looking forward to Mom’s delicious cooking.

The car comes to a stop.

Looking out through the window, I almost think the cab has stopped outside the wrong house. It’s a few seconds before I realize the driver parked at the right address.

The windows of the house are dark. Even when I returned home late at night, my parents would keep the living room lights switched on. Even when they weren’t home, they’d always keep the lamps lit for me.

A sliver of dread slips down my spine.

Opening the passenger-side door, I climb out of the car and stare at the house. Even from the distance, I can tell the curtains are closed.

The sound of another vehicle coming up behind me, makes me turn around. The same van that’s been following me all day pulls up beside the curb. I stare at it but no one climbs out.
