Eden frowned and waited until Gladys and Ms. Sanchez left the room before asking him, “Did I do okay?”

He sighed and shook his head. “The fact that you couldn’t remember some of the pertinent details is a problem. It gives them an opening to question the creditability of everything you said in your statement to the police.”

“But I’m only having memory problems because of the accident. Two months ago, when I gave my statement, I remembered everything.”

“The jury wasn’t there when you gave that statement, though. All they’ll see will be the testimony you give in court. If your memory hasn’t returned by then, we’ll have to discuss whether it would help or hurt the case to have you take the witness stand. If today is any indication, Sanchez would be able to tear you apart on cross-examination.”

Shit.

“We’re going to leave it for now,” Marlow said. “We still have a while until the court date. We’ll make the final decision then.”

Feeling like crap, Eden nodded and stood, shaking the DA’s hand one more time and mumbling her thanks when the man said he’d be in touch. She wandered back out to her rental car in a bit of a daze, all her stupid answers circling in her head like dirty water down the drain. She shouldn’t have let that opposing counsel get to her. She shouldn’t have allowed herself to get tripped up.

But you did.

As she slumped in the driver’s seat of her car and stared out the windshield, an image of her brother and Chandler from the day they’d brought her home from the hospital flashed in her mind. She’d shoved them out the door, but Chandler had turned back and handed her his card. She pulled it out of her bag now and stared down at it. Shiny gold letter reflected up at her, proclaiming, Ruthven Security.

Just in case you have any more questions. Call me if you need anything, day or night.

After the deposition, Eden had nothing but questions. Mainly focusing on how the hell she was going to get through this on her own. The short answer was, she wasn’t. She needed help here, big time. She needed someone on her side who knew how to put the pieces together—who could help her dig into this case and go on the hunt for something to bring her memories back.

And Chandler Ruthven seemed like the only man for the job.
