Two can play the angry game.
“Are you trying to give me whiplash?” I hit the end button, and lift a brow. Furious black eyes track every single move. I press the heel of my palm into my left eye to stave off the sharp pain of a headache threatening to come on.
“Can you blame me, Hark?” I release a sigh of frustration. “I didn’t know you were alive, number one.” Not letting go of his phone, I hold up my other hand and start ticking off my reasonings. Up goes another finger. “Two, this time yesterday I thought I would be in the wind. I didn’t know you. Not really. Not after four years. You think I would want to drop a kid into this life? It’s no better than mine. I mean you live in a glorified bunker. That’s numbers three and four by the way.” I count off those fingers just to make my point.
“You should have trusted me.”
“Why? Because you fucked me once and knocked me up?” I don’t mean to sound harsh and bitter. I truly don’t but it’s the pain in my heart doing the talking and not the logical part of my brain.
I wrap my hands around my middle and stalk away. I don’t know where I am going just away from this infuriating man until I don’t feel like slapping him and kissing him in the same breath.
I stop at the foot of the stairs and turn back. “But that is all before I realized something else.”
I expect to see disdain and fury when those black eyes meet mine, but it’s the exact opposite waiting for me. It’s hope. Not something I associate with Hark.
“I realized you’re not—”
Hark’s phone vibrates in my hand with an unknown number flashing on the screen. Two long strides and he’s at my side.
“It’s an unknown number. Maybe it’s Sadie.” I look at him, my heart filling with renewed hope.
I hit the answer button and I hold up the phone realizing it’s a video call. My heart leaps for joy and relief. “Sadie. Sadie, is that you?”
“No, wife. Sorry to disappoint.”
“What the hell do you want? How did you get this number? You know what? It doesn’t matter. Go to hell. I have nothing to say to you.”
“Foolish cunt. You’re clever but not enough. You know what I want.”
“Never, you rotten asshole,” I say venomously.
“I thought you would say that so I found some insurance to make sure I get what I want.”
A tiny scream peels through the speaker of the phone and I turn to Dragon. Clutching the phone I turn back to the screen, my heart lurching frantically in my chest. My palms turn sweaty. The slightly blurred background of browns and leather is of my father’s office, and he’s holding Sadie there.
“Sadie? Oh, God, no! Where is she? My daughter? Answer me, you bastard!” Two and two click together. I called her phone using Hark’s number. That’s how Sean got this number. How long had he been waiting for this? How long has he had my baby girl?
“Sorry. Sadie won’t be coming to the phone right now. She’s a little busy being dead.”
Bile rises to wash up the back of my throat. I grip the phone nearly screaming when Sean flips the camera around to show a slumped-over Sadie with a bullet hole in the back of her head.
“Where is my daughter? Tell me, what have you done?” How did he know about my daughter? I watched every move I made. Measured my exposure. Made sure I was never tailed.
Dragon pulls the phone out of my hand when I can’t stop shaking. “What do you want?”
Evil curls the tip of his lips. “The papers. I want all the banking papers. Passwords, key codes. Everything. I want the Titan empire!” He snarls into the phone and I can see the manic man peeking out from behind the faux curtain of control.
Behind me, I hear Ares and Nova. Riot and Rage come in too.
I turn wild eyes on them pleading for help.
Another scream.
“Hello? I have a little fairy here ready to grant me all my wishes. I wonder how much I could get for her on the market? I hear it’s a new venture old Titan Senior just started.”
“You fucking piece of shit. I’m going to shove the barrel of my gun down your throat and pull the trigger.”
Dragon has the phone in his hand now and is pacing to the front door and back.
