Bain's knife clattered to the tile floor. The rest of his clothes followed, as he shifted into his dark wolf form. He stopped to shake a boot off his hind leg, then growled and leapt at the tiger.

They came together, snarling and growling, teeth bared and snapping.

I reached for my power, but before I could pick up the tiger and throw him across the room, another burst out of the bathroom. Heavy paws on my chest, he knocked me to the ground.

I landed heavily enough to knock the wind and the power out of me.

Shit.

I twisted to the side, trying to push off my attacker while I got my breath back. He was too heavy for me to budge, but the distraction gave me time to inhale.

The scent of tiger was overpowering. Then there was something else, something putrid. Something dead.

The smell made me want to gag. Worse than that, it blocked me from drawing any power. Any doubt I might have had that two shifters in my suite were sent after me, was totally dismissed now.

The hemitheos knew I couldn't use my power around bad smells. They'd sent foxes to silence one of their operatives. Now apparently they wanted to silence me.

Fuck that.

I brought up my knee and slammed it into the tiger's side.

He grunted and slipped. Before he could recover, I threw him off and rolled free.

I was aiming for his nuts, but that was good enough.

I staggered to my feet and moved so the wall was at my back.

The tiger stalked toward me, feline grace in every step.

If I can shift, now would be a really good time to find out, I told myself.

Nothing.

That figured.

Bain's knife was across the room and he was too busy with the other tiger to help. If there were guards still outside, they either hadn't heard, or were in on the attack.

Awesome.

I held out my hands. "How about we talk about this?"

The tiger kept moving slowly toward me.

"I guess that's a no." I stepped along the wall until I reached a chest of drawers. I reached out my hand and felt along the top. I touched something spiky.

I picked up my hairbrush and threw it at the tiger. Not the one stalking me, the one mid-fight with Bain.

It hit the back of his head and distracted him long enough for Bain to fasten his teeth on the tiger's neck.

Orange fur darkened with blood.

Bain tossed his body aside and snarled.

The smell of blood filled my nostrils with a coppery tang. I swallowed hard and fought the urge to gag.

I locked eyes on the remaining tiger. "In case you can't count, you're outnumbered." Unless the guards really were on his side. I was going to roll with this line of conversation for now.

"Just a bit of friendly advice between paranormals. If you want to get out of here alive, you should surrender. My friend there, Bain, he quite enjoys tearing guys like you a new one." New throat in this case.
