"Might as well be comfortable while we wait," I said. I placed my hands behind my head and closed my eyes.

"I knew I should have replaced you," Devlin said angrily. "You're useless."

I cracked open an eye. That was harsh.

Before I responded, Gwendolyn laughed bitterly. "Replace him with who? Dex knows the Vault inside out. If it wasn't for him, people would be starving on the streets."

"That still happens," I admitted. I was well aware that some of the residents struggled from day to day. I did what I could to make sure no one starved, but the more paranormals lived in the city, the harder it was to house and employ everyone.

"See, he admits to being a failure," Devlin said.

I sat up and looked at him in disgust. "With all due respect, Alpha," I said sarcastically, "fuck off. I do a lot more for the Vault than you've ever done. Drinking and trying to get your wife pregnant isn't what I would call gainful employment."

"You know I do a shitload more than that," he all but roared at me.

I shrugged. “Why don’t you enlighten me?”

“Enlighten us all,” Gwendolyn muttered.

"I make the laws," Devlin snarled. "I decide who runs what. I supply the money to do it."

"You release the tax I ask for, and make the laws I recommend," I said with clenched teeth.

"Not anymore," Devlin said. "Consider yourself removed from the office of Keeper."

"Great." I hopped up from the couch and smiled at Gwendolyn. "Can I go now? You don't need me to step down from anything."

She exchanged glances with Viper, then shook her head. "No, we need it in front of everyone."

I sighed and sank back down. "We tried," I said to Devlin.

He shrugged. "It was worth a shot."

"Am I really fired?" I asked. As if that was what mattered right now.

"Naw, of course not, we're a good team." Devlin sat in a chair and crossed his legs at his ankles.

"Great." I leaned against the back of the couch and smiled when Gwendolyn glared.

"I should have guessed you'd try something."

"We wouldn't be good leaders if we didn't," I pointed out. "In spite of what you might think, the Vault is a shit load of work. Just ask our advisors. It's not all waving hands and getting other people to do everything. Did it ever occur to you that wolves lead because we're good at it?"

"That sounds like a bunch of alpha bullshit to me," Gwendolyn said. "What is it the people from the outside call it? Big dick energy?"

"At least you admit to the size of my cock," Devlin said. He grabbed his groin and curled his lip at her.

"I won't miss it," she said.

"He won't miss you," Devlin replied. He looked over to Kerina. "Hey, any time, gorgeous."

She smirked at him. "You pick an interesting time to proposition a woman."

He grinned and shrugged, but didn't even look slightly sorry. "I'll be single soon. I might as well be ready to get out and mingle, if you know what I mean?"

"Yeah, I get it," she replied. She claimed a chair of her own.

"I'm impressed," I told Devlin. "You managed to come on to Kerina and you have your balls intact. She must like you." I winked to Kerina to show I was both teasing, and trying to cause a distraction.
