"Who put you in a cell?" Viva asked.

"I would if he tried to climb the gate," I said with a grunt. "We can go around to the front gate. That way the guards will know what you look like. For next time."

"Ahhh, excellent point," Wesley said. "I suspected you weren't all brawn."

"It took me a while to work that out." Viva grinned. "I thought he was just a quiet, grumpy mountain of muscle."

"I am all of those things," I said dryly. "But once in a while I have a thought or two." Let them tease, it didn't bother me. Mountain of muscle was an accurate description if I did say so myself.

"Don't hurt yourself." Viva patted my arm, but her hand lingered for a few moments. Testing out those muscles, I assumed.

I might have flexed a little bit.

It was too dark to tell if she was flushed, but I sensed a spike of desire coming from her.

Hades, yes. Could she smell the same coming from me? I made no attempt to contain it.

"I'll manage," I said after a moment. "Straining my brain is the least of my worries right now."

Viva's hand slipped off my arm as we kept walking, but she stayed close to me. Of course she did. She was attacked just a few hours ago. It might not have sunk in yet, but out here on the street, she might feel particularly vulnerable.

I had no intention of letting her come to any harm, no matter what it took to keep her safe.

We approached the front gate and I nodded to the guards on duty.

They snapped to attention and saluted before one engaged the opening mechanism. Once it was open enough, I waved Wesley and Viva to step inside. I followed on their heels and let the guard close the gate behind me.

I took a few strides toward the Residence front door before Kerina and Knox appeared from the other side of the building, barely illuminated by light which poured out a window.

"Anything?" I asked.

"The guards on the other side saw nothing," Kerina said.

"There's no physical sign of entry," Knox said. "There are one or two places the fence could be climbed over without much difficulty."

"Liaise with the guards on duty. Tell them where. I'll put extra patrols in those places until changes can be made."

Both nodded and turned aside to do as ordered.

"I'm starting to think something is going on," Wesley said.

I filled him in, in as few words as possible. "We haven't had to keep people out in this way before," I said. "The few incursions we've had came from within. Those are harder to predict."

"See, this is why the place needs the internet," Viva said. "Much easier to do background checks on people."

"Noted," I said. "I'll pass that on to Dex." She was right, though. An enemy could enter the Keeper's employ and stay for years, waiting and biding their time. If we could monitor their messages, emails, or whatever the police did in the outside world, we could save a lot of time.

"Please do," she said. "I miss cat videos."

"And porn?" Wesley asked. He gave her a sly smile.

She grinned. "That too. And streaming shows and movies."

I quirked an eyebrow slightly. I didn't even know what that meant. The streaming part. I knew what porn was. Here, we used books, magazines, and our imaginations.

"We should get inside," I said. "I have to report to Dex, then we need some rest. Tomorrow will be a long day." The Watcher's Residence was a good few days away, even by car. About now would be a great time for that helicopter.

"Can I come?" Wesley asked.
