"They can be arrogant assholes," I agreed. "Some are okay though, like my mother." Although, I was certain she was as happy as the rest of them to see me gone. Maybe relieved would be a better word. The rest might stop thinking about her as the mother of the strange outcast.

"Can you infuse power into objects?" Dex's change of subject took me by surprise.

"Like coffee cups?" I asked. "No. That was the first clue I wasn't like everyone else. Witch kids can make their rattles shake without touching them, once they’re infused. All I could do was throw mine around the room." I grimaced.

Dex leaned over and placed his hand over one of mine. His skin was warm, his touch firm. "Throwing things sounds like a much more useful skill."

"Not if you break your toys so quickly you stop being given them," I said sadly. "Power infused toys are like these." I pointed to the plates in front of us. "Almost impossible to break."

"Almost?" Dex asked.

I looked down at the table. "I was given some of my siblings’ old toys. Turned out my power can break the unbreakable."

"That's interesting," Dex said. He looked thoughtful again.

"Are you tired of some witch made crockery?" I joked weakly.

A flash of surprised amusement flickered in his eyes. "No, I'm just curious. You intrigue me."

I smiled faintly. "I try."

"You don't need to," Dex said. "Not with me."

I read between the lines. "Just with the Alpha?"

Dex grimaced. "I wish I could say you're wrong, but…"

I grimaced in response. "Fucking great."

I dozedfor an hour or two after Dex left. The bed was comfortable, especially after sleeping on the ground, but I was too anxious to really sleep. Thoughts of hemitheos, the Alpha, the tigers, and Czari warred for time in my head. Those and the guys. Dex in particular left his scent in my memory. And deep in my core.

A big part of me wanted to stick my head through the doorway between our rooms and ask him to join me. I almost jumped up to do it, but held myself back. I was too tense, too wired, but at the same time, too exhausted. Both of us deserved better than that.

I sighed and gave up trying to sleep, or calm my mind. I got up to dress and tame my hair as best I could.

I thought about trying to impress the Alpha with my nicest blouse, and a pair of tailored black trousers I found in the wardrobe. I didn't have to try them on to know they would look amazing. Dex had impeccable taste. I pulled them out and touched the fabric lightly with my fingertips. They felt…expensive.

"Fuck it," I muttered. I hung the trousers back in the wardrobe and put on jeans and a t-shirt instead. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and tied it back with an elastic hairband.

I admired myself in the mirror for a moment. The t-shirt fell to just above the waistband of my jeans, showing just a hint of taut midriff. The jeans fit like a glove, showing off my long legs and ass, which was smokin' after all my recent walking and riding.

"Yep, you've still got it," I told my reflection.

"Yes, you do," Knox said softly.

I jumped.

Hand on my chest, I whirled to face him as he stepped through the doors which led from the balcony.

"Bloody hell, you scared the shit out of me." I squinted. "Wait a minute, how did you get up here?"

He cocked his head slightly and smiled. "I have skills." He'd shaved, which was a shame. I quite liked the scruffy look on him.

"You don't say," I drawled. "Is one of them trying to get your neck broken? I could have used my power to throw you back off the balcony." He was lucky I hadn't blasted him before I realised who he was.
