Assignations? What was this, 1800? Oh, right. The Vault.

"I don't think Dex would hide if he was sleeping with someone," I said. "He wasn't ashamed of anything." At least, nothing I knew about.

"What if the woman was married? Surely he would hide that?" Seth stepped away from Gwendolyn's body, his nose wrinkled as if repulsed by her.

"I have no idea," I said. "If he did that, it was before I arrived here. Or he was discreet." Now I thought about it, I hated the idea of him being with another woman.

Ironic, considering the fact I cared about and lusted after three guys. I never said I wasn't a hypocrite. I really, really should keep my distance from them. That would be easy now.

I frowned. Had any of them thought about coming for me, or had they just saved their own hides? If they bought that I was working with Seth, they might hate me now.

That made my heart hurt more than anything else. It was safer for them to keep believing that, but it stung like a bitch.

Seth resumed pacing. "They had help. That is obvious. I presume it was the shifters I saved you from. The dragons, the so-called Watcher." He grimaced like he smelled something bad.

"I don't think the Dragonesque would bother," I said. "Why risk themselves that way? They do their own thing."

"The others then," Seth said. "The Watcher must have a place he stays when in the city."

"If he does, I don't know about it. I know him even less than I know the Alpha. I mean, Devlin."

"That servant chap would know," Seth said. “Baffor. He seems like the kind of person who knows everything that goes on here."

"I suppose so," I said uncertainly. He was right. If anyone here knew, it would be Baffor. The man might not spill secrets like that though. Discretion was the middle name of a good member of Dex's staff.

"I'll ask him," Seth said. He paused for a moment.

I had a feeling I wouldn’t like what he was going to say next.

"Better yet," he said finally, "we can draw them out."

I swallowed. "Um, okay. How?" Yep, this wasn't going to be good, was it?

He eyed me. His smile sent chills through me.

"Bait," he said simply. "We'll lure Dex out with the one thing he can't seem to resist. You."

"Oh, I don't know," I said as casually as I could. "He seems capable of resisting me pretty well. If I didn't know better, I would think he wasn't interested at all."

"Gwendolyn said otherwise," Seth said coolly.

I regarded her body for a few moments. What else had she told him?

"Did you trust her?" I asked.

"To some extent, yes," he replied. "In this, why not? What would she have to gain by lying?"

"I have no idea," I said. "I would suggest you ask her, but it's a bit late for that."

"Somewhat," he agreed. "So I'll ask you. Did the Keeper have some attachment to you?"

I wanted to deny it, but I found myself nodding. "Like people get attached to their pets."

He rubbed a thumb over his lips. "Let's hope that's enough, for his sake. And yours."

"And yours too," I said. "I guess having him and Devlin on the loose isn't good for your plans."

"Our plans," he said smoothly. "You're a part of this."
