Luckily the petals never lost their scent, although it would fade over time. When I got them back, they’d still be good. Who was I kidding, they were tainted now, from being in the hands of our captors. I would replace them the first chance we got. If I got the chance.

"Waiting it is." I sighed. "I hate to say it, but we owe Helene a debt of gratitude. If she hadn't taught me to heal, I wouldn't have been able to help you."

"You would have figured it out," Bain assured me.

"I'd like to think so," I said. "But the truth is, I didn't have a clue it was something I could do. Sometimes I wonder—"

"What else you might be able to do that you didn't know about?" Bain finished for me.

"Yeah, exactly." I grimaced. "If I knew hemitheos even existed, I could have learnt." That led me to two questions. "Do you think the Covener knew they existed? Do you think we're really demigods?" Those were both huge questions and I didn't think Bain would have the answers.

"You'd have to ask the Covener the first question, and Comus the second," Bain replied. "Have you seen him since the mountain?"

"The Covener?" I asked, pretending to misunderstand. "If I saw him up there, I would have pushed him off the side."

"Get in line," Bain said half under his breath. "But I meant Comus."

"I haven't seen him," I said. "But why would you shove Denis Crane off a mountain?" I'm not saying he didn't deserve a dozen shoves, but I didn't realise Bain hated him too.

"Because he treated you like shit," Bain said. "Demigod or not, you should be treated like a goddess, not a—"

"Piece of crap?" I suggested. "How should a goddess be treated? I've seen the statues around the Residence. There seems to be a lot of fucking and some large cocks."

"Would any of that be bad?" Bain sounded amused.

"Hades no," I replied. "If that's what it’s like, then I'm here for it. Well, nothere, here. Somewhere better than here. Here is pretty shit."

Bain chuckled. "Yeah, I know what you mean. I think we can do better than a rusty old truck driven by… whoever is driving."

"They might be watching," I said. "No way I'm going to give them a treat like that."

The truth was, my blood sang at the idea. Not of being watched, but being fucked with huge cocks. Bring it on. If anything, it gave me an incentive to stay alive long enough to enjoy the experience. All of the experiences.

I peered toward the truck cabin. If I could burn a hole through the wall with my eyes, I would. The hemitheos, demigods or not, were really screwing with my sex life. For that alone, they deserved a punch in the nuts. Or the tits. Whatever hurt the most.

In the back of my mind was something far more pressing than getting laid. Yes, there was such a thing.

I had no idea how many of them there were. Not just hemitheos, but their allies as well. We might be horribly outnumbered and—what was the expression? Outgunned? Out powered, at any rate. Another thing Helene taught me was that I was unprepared to deal with others like me. She overpowered me within minutes of us meeting. If the hemitheos we were dealing with now had trained all their lives…

I would be little more than a speck against them. A speck of shiny, silver glitter floating on the wind.

If I was nothing, then what the fuck did they need me for? I turned a dozen ideas over in my head, but I came up with no solutions. None that made much sense anyway. It could just be all about my good looks and sense of humour, but I doubted it. I mean, I was hot and funny, but this was a lot of effort just for eye candy.

"We'll get through this," Bain said. "When we do, you can have all the orgasms you want."

"That's one hells of a promise," I said. "I want lots of them."

His teeth flashed in the darkness. "Me too."

I laced my fingers through his. "That sounds like the most solid plan I've heard in a long time."

"It's very solid," he agreed. "You might even say hard."

I snorted. "I walked right into that, didn't I?" Not that I minded, but the set up was so obvious I should have seen it in the dark.

"Just a bit," he agreed. "But that's okay. It just means we're on the same wavelength."

"That's one way to look at it," I said. I snuggled up closer to him. He put an arm around me and kissed my head.
