I placed my hands lightly on Bain's head and felt for the injury.

He jerked.

Without being asked, Knox moved closer to Bain and pressed his hands on the other man's chest.

"I'll hold him still. You do whatever you need to do," he said.

I gave him a tiny nod, enough to let him know I heard, without breaking my focus.

Starting with small strands of power, I delved into his head. Part of his skull was pushed inward. Putting it back in place and knitting the bone was surprisingly easy.

The fluid around his brain was trickier. Some of it was supposed to be there, but not to this extent. I had to drain some of it away and hope I left enough. If I didn't, he might as well be dead. I will have killed him anyway.

He twisted under Knox's hands and moaned.

"Just a few moments longer," I said between gritted teeth. "Hang on just a bit longer."

I don't know if he heard me, but he stilled while I searched for any further damage. If I found any, it would probably be beyond my ability to fix, but I found nothing else, thank Hades.

Before I could pull the last slivers of power out of him, they slipped away, leaving me in a puddle of exhaustion. I slumped forward, forcing Knox to move his hands from Bain to grab me. He pulled me to him and held me close.

"You did great," he said gently. "He's breathing easier now. He'll be fine."

He couldn't possibly know that, but his words soothed me when I wanted to break down and cry.

"He's a stubborn bastard," Knox added. "He'll be up and growling at us in no time."

I looked up and wiped my eyes, which were wet in spite of me holding back tears.

"He better be." Dex needed him. The Alpha needed him.

I needed him.

"You should rest." Knox pulled my head against his chest.

"I can't," I said, but my eyes wouldn't open, even if I insisted on it. "We need to get out of here."

A shout roused me from near sleep to fully awake.

"The last balloon," Knox said.

Fuck. I forgot all about it.

"Are you sure it's the last?" I asked.

He drew his head back and looked at me. "Let's hope so. Have you got any power left?"

I felt like a wrung out dishcloth. "I don't think so."

"We'll have to try something else." He kissed my forehead and untangled himself from me to stand.

"Knox," I said before he could step away.

He stopped and looked down at me.

"Be careful," I told him. "Or else." I wanted to tell him that if anything happened to him too, my heart wouldn't take it. Seeing Bain lying covered in blood was bad enough.

He smiled. "I will. Don't worry, this is what I do." He turned and trotted away.
