“Fuck,” he said through clenched teeth, “I don’t have a condom.”

Without a word, she pulled away from the wall and walked naked across the apartment. She was so confident in her body, and it made him just stand and stare at her, not follow her like he should have to take them to the bedroom. Instead, he was mesmerized by her ass and by how her blonde hair brushed her delicate shoulders. He hadn’t spent a moment kissing those shoulders, tasting them.

All too quickly, she returned with a condom packet in her hand and a smile on her lips. It was too late for him to move further into the apartment; his feet were stuck to the floor. As she drew close enough, he pulled her into his arms to kiss the smile off her lips, leaving her panting.

She smiled again and leaned away, holding the condom wrapper with her teeth as she took his erection in her hand again. He watched as she caressed it and ran her fingers up and down his length, then stroked him a few times before reaching up with one hand and ripping the packet open with her teeth. Then slowly, she unrolled it over him. Too slowly.

At that point, he had never wanted a woman more than this one; he was shaking with it. Grabbing her around the waist, he lifted her, twirling until her back was pressed against the wall so he could take her nipple into his mouth once again. She was so perfect. He slowly lowered her down the wall until his erection was pressing into her hot center. Watching her gray eyes start to lazily close, he smiled when they popped open as he slid into her, and then they squeezed shut with a moan.

Her legs wrapped around him as he slowly slid in and out of her. Math watched her as he moved; her head was thrown back, and she was moaning with each thrust. But he wanted more than moans. He wanted her so hot that she couldn’t make words again. He picked up his pace, and she matched his movements, and soon, her moaning became one long sound. Before he could think, she had picked up the pace even more and was writhing in his arms. Moans turned into guttural sounds that turned into the crazy sounds she made when she came.

As she went over the edge again, the feeling of her tightening around him shredded the last of his control, and he came at the same time. As he pumped into her and tensed, she clung to him and yelled his name, “Mathias.”

He held her there against the wall as they breathed heavily and enjoyed the moments after sex. Math rested his forehead against her shoulder and slid out of her as he set her down on her feet. Looking at them touch the ground, he realized her toes were painted green like her shirt, but not recently done. The tops were white, showing that her nails had grown since she had gotten them done.

On the table next to them, her phone sounded—another text came in. She seemed to get a lot of texts, maybe birthday wishes. Both he and Tess looked at the phone, but neither commented on it.

Turning to her, he saw her chin go into the air as she took a ragged breath. Looking away from him, she said, “You can show yourself out.”

Math watched her walk across the small apartment into what he assumed was her bedroom and shut the door behind her with a slam. Cursing, he realized he had fucked up. But even now, he didn’t know what to say. He had never done this before. He had been married to the first woman he slept with and hadn’t ever picked up a woman at a bar or at her door, whichever this qualified as.

He knew he should go and knock on her door, but he didn’t know what he would say if she opened it. They didn’t get along before; why should this change anything? It didn’t.

Slowly he started to dress, thinking maybe she would come out. She didn’t. Her phone buzzed again, and he picked it up.

Nat:Call me, sweetie.

The text was from someone named Nat.Well, Nat can have her, he decided. When he was fully dressed, he didn’t have any reason to stay, so he quietly left.

CHAPTER6

Years ago,Tess’s dad and brother, Alexei, had taken her and Natasha to a livestock auction. Tess had been fascinated by the fast-talking auctioneer and all the animals she saw. As the day progressed, she watched animal after animal being sold after much bidding and excitement. At one point, a lonely baby lamb was brought out; her mom had not wanted her, and she was next to be bid on. To Tess’s surprise, nobody bid on the little lamb.… Nobody wanted her. Tess cried until her dad bought that little lamb for her. For years she had loved the lamb that no one wanted until it was old and died in her arms.

Looking out over the audience at Mia’s Red River Flood Fund Raising Auction, she wondered if there was anyone out there that would take pity and bid on her. She knew how that little lamb had felt that day, looking out over an audience that didn’t seem interested in her.

Tess couldn’t shake the nervous energy racing through her, cursing herself again for letting Mia sign her up for this. Minutes ago, she had watched Ned Williams, who did catering, walk out onto the stage. He had also volunteered to donate his time and abilities for a good cause. He, too, had been suckered in by Mia to do this.

Today was April first, and Mia had approached her three weeks before to see if she would be willing to offer herself up for auction—well, her financial abilities, really. But in reality, the bidder could use her for almost anything. At the time, it had sounded a little fun, but today it sounded like hell.

Since Ned was popular in the community, a bidding war started. His price kept rising until, in the end the MC had asked the caterer if he was willing to do both parties for the highest bid, doubling the amount of money raised. Of course, he said yes; it was for a good cause.

This auction took place every year at this time, just before the river flooded with the snowmelt. Every year, the river swelled for hundreds of miles along its banks, causing all kinds of damage. Since Landstad was only a few miles from the river, there was always some damage, but this was the first year they were bidding off people and their talents to help the cause. Mostly it was just stuff, but this year, Mia had an idea on how to improve it.

So far, everyone who volunteered had made more than any one item had. Well, until Tess. She was sure there would be no offers for her.

Tess had plastered a fake smile on her face as she stood on the bright stage of the high school gym. It was so bright, she saw everyone’s faces, which was not making this any better.

Before she could back out completely, Natalie introduced her, “Next, we have financial advice from Tess Thorn. She is the president of Landstad Bank. She has over ten years of financial planning and personal banking under her belt. Your bid on her will give you six full hours of her undivided attention. If you’re not interested in organizing your money, she’s also a mean cook, can run a vacuum, and argue you under the table.”

Tess stopped listening and concentrated on not tripping. She had worn her favorite shoes, but sometimes the heels had a mind of their own.Walk, do not trip.

As the bidding started, Tess tried not to look out over the audience or listen to what was happening. She tried not to think about that lamb that only she loved enough to buy. The crack of the gavel falling caused her to look at Natalie for any indication as to what happened. Natalie was smiling at her and pointing as she said, “Math Nordskov is the highest bidder at $2,000.”

Tess almost tripped. What the hell? Two grand and Mathias?Which was the bigger shock? She wasn’t worth two grand, though she didn’t know how much she would actually be worth. Ned hadn’t even brought in two grand.

Wheeling around she rushed backstage without falling on her face.

Once backstage, Mia came up from nowhere and hugged her. “See?! I knew you would bring in some cash. And now you owe me two grand.”
