“I know. I just. It’s too soon. I’m scared. I’m scared one day Rex will finally lose it, and I’ll be left alone, raising a baby. You know how his moods are.” I wipe my nose on a napkin, and Lorna plops back on the booth next to me.

“What are we talking about,” she asks with a mouthful of fries. I look to Nick and shake my head.

He gives her a big smile and says, “Dick. What else.”

We finish our food, then Lorna drops me at home. Rex never met us, and I’m shocked to find him on the couch when I walk in. My father has the bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand, and he looks pissed.

“What’s going on?” I ask quietly, twisting my fingers together nervously, and my dad snorts.

“Oh look, the little teenage statistic is here,” he slurs. My eyes widen, and I glance at Rex. He is sitting so still, and I’m scared. A calm before the storm.

He shakes his head and stands, facing my father. “You do not get to talk to my future wife like that,” he sneers, and I freeze. My father freezes and looks between us before laughing.

“Oh this is rich. You finally did it. Didn’t you. You trapped my little girl?” He moves over to Rex and shoves him. Rex puts his hands up and warns him, but he’s too gone. The anger and alcohol taking over. He takes a swing, and I try and stop him from hitting Rex. He wobbles, and I’m shoved on the couch, out of the way.

Rex gets into his face. “Don’t you ever put your hands on the mother of my child.” He grabs my hand and tugs me to his car, harshly. My feet slip, and he starts to almost drag me.

“Stop, what are you doing?” I scream as he shoves me harder into his passenger seat. The door slams, and the locks click. I fight to open it, but he must have child locked me in. He storms back into my house, and I watch through the large living room window as he fights with my dad. Blood runs down his chin from the right hook my dad just gave, and he smiles like some kind of psychopath.

Smacking my hands on the window of the car repeatedly, I scream and yell, but it doesn’t matter, they can’t hear me. I know that Rex is just trying to protect us, but if he thinks my dad would have hurt me, he’s wrong. Even drunk, he would never.

A few minutes later, Rex storms out of my house with some of my bags, filled to the brim. He tosses them in the trunk and slams it closed, making me jump. I scooch as close to the window as I can as he climbs in the driver’s seat. He starts the car, and I don’t say a word. I grip my phone tighter and hide it under my thigh.

We pull up to a mansion of a house. I can’t stop my jaw from dropping. “This is where you live?” I ask him, and he scoffs.

“Welcome to the Mayor’s home, Kitty.” I ignore his sarcasm and take in the sprawling gardens and the amazing pool. He follows a stone path to a smaller cottage and parks the car. He gives me a smile and kisses my hand.

“Welcome home, baby.” I give him a shaky smile back and wait for him to open my door. He pulls me into his arms, lifting me in a bridal carry, as he opens the front door and walks us over the threshold. I can’t help but laugh at him being silly. I love when he is like this.

He sets me down, and I can’t help but gasp, it’s filled with baby stuff. There is a crib and a changing table, still in the box, in the corner of the room. Bags upon bags of clothes and blankets, too.

“Rexley, what is all this?” I ask him, but the smile on his face has me pausing. He shrugs and moves over to the bedroom. There is a bassinet and a small pink teddy bear inside. I cover my mouth as I start to cry. This is all too much.

CHAPTER11

NOW

REXLEY

Some might think it was wrong to keep the mother of my child in an induced sleep, but I knew she would fight me about the bedrest, and I refuse to lose another baby. I can admit these few months with her sleeping, I’ve been lonely. I may have gone off the island and done something that she will never forgive me for. Well, that’s if she ever finds out.

Hopefully it won’t come to that. I glance at the cameras and find her crying on the floor, talking to our baby. Good, she needs to bond. I have been talking, reading, and singing to my little princess this whole time.

When she woke up a few days ago, I knew I fucked up by how she was behaving. I wish she could just see that I did it for the baby. I could have kept her asleep until birth, but I missed her, and I wanted her to be here with me.

She’s still mad, and I know it’s going to take some time. I have been letting her explore the island and walk the dog. I even gave her access to a computer. She has limited access, and I have to be with her when she uses it. But I’m trying to make her happy.

I leave her alone and walk over to the kitchen. It’s almost dinner time, and I know she will need some food. I’m hoping some chicken pasta will suffice. I’ve never been a good cook, but I can handle this.

I finish up plating our dinner and bring it to our room. She gives me the first smile in a long time, and I sigh. Maybe she won’t throw this plate at my head. I set it on the small table on the balcony and take my seat. I wait for her, and she moves to the side of me.

“It’s kicking. Do you want to feel?” she asks me, and I’m so shocked she’s even acknowledging me, I freeze. She giggles and grabs my hand, placing it on her belly. I wait a minute, and sure enough, something moves.

Tears fill my eyes, and I don’t bother hiding them.

“Hi princess. It’s Daddy,” I coo, and Cat gives me a watery smile. I never got to feel Adley kick. We lost her before twenty weeks. The day we found out she was a girl. I will never forgive myself for that fight. I ruined the best thing that I ever had, and I will be damned if I let history repeat itself.

This baby is mine, and I will do anything in my power to protect her.
