“What you need, is a Cora. Did you tell her yet?”

“Cora won’t work with me, let alone for me. And no, I wanted to tell you first because I know Veronica is going to get salty and come for me on this. So you need to get ahead of it.”

“Anyone see it happen that can cover your story?”

“The entire hotel bar watched me sprawl her out on her ass. I’m sure someone saw what happened before that.”

“Good. I’ll work on getting security footage and statements from employees on hand in case she tries to spin a different tale. But you need to call Cora. Now.”

“On it. Thanks.”

“Anytime brother.” He said and hung up, onto the task of saving my reputation and marriage.

As soon as I walked into my suite, I cursed and ripped my tie from my shirt, pulling on the buttons and tearing my jacket off as I fought to stay in control.

Too much had fucking happened the last few days. My life had been one of order and predictability and now it was chaos, and I was losing my grip on it.

I dialed Cora’s number and her sleepy voice answered on the third ring. “Hello handsome.” She called and I took a deep breath, letting the warmth in her voice move through my veins.

“Hello Angel.” I sighed, feeling tired and weighed down.

“I thought you were going off to dinner?” We’d spoken before I went down for a drink before dinner and she had been headed to bed, tired from her ordeal today.

“Change of plans. I’m staying in tonight.”

“What happened?” She was in tune with me and caught my mood.

“Veronica made a pass at me.” I said firmly, “I fired her and have Dex working on staying ahead of it.”

“Ahead of it?” She asked, sounding much more awake now. “Ahead of what?”

“Of any tale she tries to spin about what happened to get back at me for turning her down flat and firing her for it.”

“Did you… did you touch her?”

“She kissed me.” I answered her honestly, hating the way that was going to hurt her. “And I pushed her on her ass in the middle of the bar for it.”

She paused and took a deep breath, “Okay.” She replied simply, but I could literally hear the wheels spinning in her head.

“Cora I’m sorry. You know I was already working on eliminating having her travel with me and you know I wanted to stay the fuck home with you instead of being here. I should have just fucking stayed home.” I ground out, cursing, and throwing a lamp across the room of the suite’s living room.

“Maverick stop.” Her calm voice called through the phone. “I trust you. And I love you.”

That stopped me short in the middle of my tirade and I froze with my hand wrapped around the neck of a matching lamp, ready to chuck it at the wall to match its twin. “You trust me?” I asked in disbelief. I was expecting anger and fear and insecurity.

Not trust.

She sighed and her sweet voice called to me. “I trust you Maverick. I know you didn’t give her any reason to come onto you and that you didn’t allow any of it happen. I believe you.”

“Okay.” I said, in shock.

She chuckled a bit and I relaxed, throwing myself into an armchair as I rubbed my hand over my face.

“So what are you going to do for tomorrow?” She asked, knowing I had a full day of meetings planned for tomorrow.

“Muddle through on my own until I can get home to you and bury myself into my favorite place on earth and forget about all of this. Dexter is going to start the process of getting me a new assistant, a male this time, and hopefully I can make this transition smooth, but I doubt it will be. Training an assistant is one of the hardest things to do in my field. But it’ll be worth it in the long run.”

“Let me know if there’s anything I can do for you from here baby.”
