Chapter 13 – Maverick

Sunlight glowed through the windows of my bedroom and my eyes adjusted to the bright intrusion. I never slept past sunrise because I was always at work, yet lately, I found it harder and harder to pry myself out of bed and away from Cora’s adorable pouty lips that parted perfectly in her sleep when she tucked herself into my side.

As teenagers, I snuck into her room all the time, sleeping in her bed next to her and waking with only enough time to scale back down the Hawthorn tree below her bedroom window before her parents got up. But this was different because instead of feeling like I was getting away with something, I felt like I was finally holding everything I deserved, and no one was going to come in and take that away from me.

Cora shifted in her sleep, rolling away from me and sighing into her side of the bed as she got comfortable again and I let her go, giving her space as I slid from bed to let her sleep. I’d kept her up well into the morning, using her body and intentionally trying to knock her up one orgasm at a time.

And God it was fucking intense each and every time I imagined finally getting the family with her that I so desperately desired. I shook my head, shaking away the shock that just a week ago I’d harbored so much anger towards her because of the way she left me, before I’d known the truth. And now, she was my fiancé, and we were getting married next week.

Well, we were getting married next week if I could pull it off. And there was only one person in the world that could help me pull this off in a week. I walked out of the bedroom and into my office in a pair of sweatpants and looked out at the city below through the windows behind my desk for a while before sitting down in my chair and getting to work. I answered urgent emails and sent off some to my team, delegating duties, as Reid and Dexter had called it.

Hope they like being delegated to on a Saturday morning.

Fuckers.

“Ah hmm.”

I looked up from my computer screen to the sexy as sin woman standing in the doorway to my home office with a soft smile on her flawless face. She leaned against the door frame wearing my black shirt from last night, hanging off her shoulder and clinging to her flared hips where it ended right below her panties. Her hair was in a bun on top of her head and the bare toes of one foot ran up and down her other leg seductively.

“Well good morning.” I said, leaning back in my chair and rubbing my hand over the stubble on my chin. “God, you are breathtaking.” I whispered in awe, feeling the tingles of desperation clenching my heart in my chest from how intense my feelings were for her.

She smiled shyly and rolled her eyes, chewing on her lip as she leaned off the doorway and tip toed across the room to me. I pushed back in my chair and turned so my lap was open to her as she rounded my desk and pulled her down onto my thighs, letting her lush ass settle right onto the hardness of my insatiable dick that was fully alert now. My hands slid over the cotton barely containing her delicious curves and my body reacted to her instantly. She put both hands behind the back of my neck and slid her fingernails through the short hair at my nape as she leaned in and offered her pillowy lips to me.

“Good morning Mav.” She purred and I felt the vibrations through her chest pressed to mine, sending bolts of electricity through us both. “I woke up alone.” She pouted, sticking her bottom lip out and I leaned in and sucked it into my mouth and nibbled it.

“I didn’t want to wake you up; I kept you up all night long as it was.” I said, resting my palm on her bare thigh.

“I like what happens when we’re both awake in bed though.”

I chuckled and leaned back in the chair to look at her. “We have a lot to do before next weekend. I was just getting the ball rolling on it.”

“The wedding you insist on having in seven days?” She asked with skepticism in her voice.

“The wedding I insist on having in seven days because it’s ten years late as it is.” I affirmed and she sighed.

“We don’t have to rush this Mav. I’m not going anywhere.”

“I know that Cora. But I also know what I want, and I want this.” I said firmly, to show her I had zero hesitation. “Do you not want to be married to me right now?” I asked, the thought suddenly implanting itself in my brain. “Did I rush this for you? I didn’t even ask you.” I hurried on, panic starting to rush through my veins.

“Mav.” She warned in a low but firm voice as she tilted her hips to pin me back in the chair as I started getting restless. “I’d marry you today if you asked me to. I’m not worried about it because of that. I’m just worried about…” She paused, letting her gaze fall from my eyes to my lips as she worked hers through her teeth.

“Tell me.”

She sighed and looked back up at me, tilting her head in uncomfortableness. “I’m worried what everyone will think. About me.” Her voice was soft and quiet, and I could feel the vulnerability in it, so I tightened my arms around her waist and pulled her even closer.

“What do you imagine they will think?” I wanted to know what fears were in her head, so I knew in what ways I needed to reassure her.

“I’m afraid they’ll think I trapped you. If I do get pregnant right away, everyone will think we got married because of that. And even if I don’t get pregnant…” She faded off and sighed. “They’ll still think I went after you for your money.”

“Are you trapping me?” I asked her seriously, “Because last I checked, I was the one who kidnapped you from your apartment and haven’t left you alone since. I’m the one who is actively trying to knock you up every waking second and I’m also the one who fucked everything up years ago to lose you to begin with.” I leaned forward and kissed the side of her neck below her ear. “I want to talk about that too.”

She’d asked me not to get into it the other night, but I wanted to get it off my chest before we went any further in our relationship now because it was important to me.

“About that night?” She asked, and I could feel her hesitation in her spine.

“Yes. I need to confess to everything I did and explain to you why, so we have no secrets going into this marriage. I think it’s best this way.”

“Okay.” She said gently but slid her legs off of mine and stood up, fighting against my tightening hold. “I just want some space when we talk about this so I can process it appropriately.” She cut me off as I started protesting about her walking away from me and went and sat down in the chair across from me on the other side of my desk. She brought her knees up to her chest and stared at me with fear in her perfect turquoise eyes. “Tell me.”
