“What were your requirements?” I asked Mav as the sons started pulling trays of rings and diamonds out onto the marble.

“At least five carat solitaire stone center with a multi-diamond wedding band to match, I told him you used to like the vintage and dainty look and we needed to incorporate that if you wanted that still.” Mav said, sliding a piece of my blond hair behind my ear as he looked down at me adoringly.

“Are you sure about this? About me?” I asked, forcing my eyes to stay locked on his instead of on the twinkling diamonds being laid out in front of me in case he was uncertain about this all. I didn’t want to get my hopes up to have them pulled out from under me again.

“One hundred percent positive. I’ve never wanted anything more in my life Cora.” He said, leaning down and I tilted my head back further and offered my lips to his letting him kiss me.

When he finally pulled back I felt the blush on my cheeks and whispered against his lips. “Okay.”

I turned and looked down at the arrangement before me and took a deep breath trying to stay grounded and sane as all the beauty tried to steal away my good sense. I chewed on my lip as I let my eyes rove over the twinkling options before me. “Holy moly they are all giant.”

Mav chuckled and Ruby smiled proudly.

I leaned forward and looked closer and quickly felt an overwhelming sense of anxiety crawl up my spine. “I can’t.” I said, leaning back and shaking my head. “They’re all too much Mav.”

“No they’re not.” He said firmly. “They’re not even close enough to being what you deserve after everything Cora. But I know there’s not a chance you’d let me put anything bigger on your finger, so we’ll compromise on these.” He said, looking over the options and I watched him zero in on one that stole my attention just moments ago.

He reached forward and pulled a wedding band from the velvet cushion finger it laid on and looked at it closer before turning towards me and holding it out. “Do you remember the time I stole that ring from my mom’s jewelry box when we were kids.” He said as the memory captivated us both. “We were what, twelve?” He asked and I snickered and nodded.

“My twelfth birthday.” I agreed looking up at his face as he smiled.

“I brought it to your party and pulled you away from everyone and put it on your thumb because it was too fucking big to even come close to fitting on any other finger at that age.” He laughed and shook his head. “It was ugly and gaudy as hell, but it was what I thought would impress you the most in my stupid pre-teen boy brain. My dad knew exactly where it had went when my mom told him it was missing later that night.”

“They grounded you for a month for taking it.” I laughed and leaned into his side.

“I wanted to give you a real ring, considering we’d been engaged for years at that point already.” He scoffed like it was no big deal to steal an emerald diamond ring from his mom’s vaulted jewelry box. “My mom took me to Ruby’s the next day and helped me pick out your promise ring and I gave it to you that night, before they locked me away in solitary confinement for a month.” He joked dramatically.

Ruby sighed and brought his hands to his chest. “I remember that!” He gushed on, “The spiral vintage infinity band.” He recalled exactly the ring that Maverick had given to me two days after my twelfth birthday in promise to me.

The band on the promise ring looked exactly like the band on this one, though this one hadfarmore diamonds on it.

Maverick picked up my left hand and slid the twisted band on my ring finger and it glided effortlessly into place like it was meant for me. I held my breath as I looked down at the intricate wedding band of platinum and diamond around my finger that matched the ring I’d lost a decade ago.

“They kept my old one.” I whispered as sadness tried to pull me out of this moment.

Mav’s hand tightened around mine and I felt his entire body tense before I looked up into his eyes. “We’ll get it back love. I promise.”

I shook my head and took a deep breath. “I love this one.” I said, looking down at admiring the new ring on my finger. “I don’t need an engagement ring Mav, just this band is perfect.”

He kissed my temple and slid his hands over my spine, chuckling into my hair. “Not a chance in hell." He said firmly. “But good try.”

I rolled my eyes as he pulled back and we turned towards Ruby again who was watching closely with his son’s on each side of him.

“I have the perfect match to that ring if you’re interested in seeing it dear.” Ruby said and I nodded to him, eager to see the pair to the beautiful ring on my finger already. He reached into a case to his side and pulled the ring out and handed it to Mav without letting me see it. Mav looked down at the gem in his hand and smiled over at me and I knew it was the one based solely off the twinkle in Mav’s eye.

He took my hand and slid the engagement ring onto my finger, settling it next to the wedding band and then kissed my palm before placing my hand on the countertop in front of me.

“My God.” I gasped at how perfect the duo looked together on my finger. Tears burned the back of my eyes as I gazed lovingly at the giant ring he added.

“It’s five carats.” Ruby started, leaning forward to highlight the features of the diamond. “Round cut, with two more carats on each side down to the platinum band that twists into the infinity loops like the wedding band. Overall between the two bands there is over nine carats.”

I just stared down in awe at the set and then smiled up at Mav. “It’s giant.”

“It’s perfect.” He responded and then looked over at Ruby. “But I want an identical band to match the wedding band, so she has one on each side of the engagement ring.”

“Why?” I asked, “These are more than enough.”

“This one is for the past.” He said, running his thumb nail over the twisted wedding band against my knuckle. “This one is for the present.” He said, twisting the engagement ring slightly and then looking up at me. “And the other band will be for our future. I want to come full circle with you Cora. I want your engagement ring completely surrounded by me on both sides.”
