We made it around the corner before we stopped running and by then we were holding our sides and wiping tears from our eyes as we laughed wildly.

It felt good to laugh like that.

Luckily, McCulley’s was literally on the corner, so we didn’t have far to go before we ducked in off the street to hide.

We found a high-top table in the back and Nat and I each took a stool while Reid went to get our drinks.

“Hurry, tell me the dirty bits before he gets back!” Nat said, leaning forward.

“What dirty bits? It was hot as fuck, but I regret it now. And he was probably calling down to fire me in person so he could watch me cry.” I said, laying my head down on my arms on the table.

She laughed and then snorted as she covered her face. Reid showed up with a tray full of shots, some beers, and a basket full of popcorn as we continued laughing at my ridiculous plight.

“Okay, cheers girls.” He said, handing out shots with lime and salt. We each did a shot and chased them with beer and then did another one right away after.

We joked and chatted away for a while, taking shot after shot and shoving popcorn down our throats trying to absorb it. “Alright, now lay it all on me. How do you know Mav and how the fuck did you manage to get him so riled up from just being in the same room as him?”

“Oh jeeze, where to start?” I said, taking another long drink of my beer.

“Start at the beginning.” Reid said.

“Well I took his virginity, for one.”

Reid snorted on his next shot, and it came out of his nose as Natalie choked on a piece of popcorn, leaving the three of us in a heap of coughs and sputtering as the alcohol started making our filters fade and our friendships grow.

“Oh please tell me all about Maverick Jones’ first time.” Reid finally said when he could breathe again. “Please tell me he was a two-pump chump and embarrassed himself entirely.” He laid across the table with his hands clasped in front of him like he was praying to me.

I laughed and shook my head, “I’m not telling you that, because I’d be telling you about my first time too and that’s too personal. But he wasn’t just my first, we’d been together since we were in second grade, and we dated all the way to two months before we were supposed to go to Duke together.”

Reid’s eyes widened, “No way! You’re that girl!” He said in awe as he slumped down into his chair. “Oh it all makes perfect sense now!”

“What? What makes sense?” Nat asked, looking between us as none of it made any sense to her obviously.

“He was miserable when he started freshman year at college. He didn’t talk about life much outside of school, but he did say some bits and pieces about how the girl he was going to marry left him without a backwards glance and how he had his whole life planned out with her before that. And you’re telling me that girl was you!”

“Oh dear, you not only had Maverick Jones’ body, but you also had his heart too.” Nat quipped with a romantic look on her face.

“What happened to make you break up with him?” Reid asked, pushing another shot towards me.

I took it, loving the warmth that settled into my body from the alcohol. “I found him nailing my best friend into a wall at a party he wasn’t even supposed to be at.”

“Oh, ouch.” Nat grimaced and Reid put his hand on my shoulder in support.

A menacing voice growled behind me. “I thought I told you to keep your fucking hands off of her.” I whipped my head around to see Maverick standing behind me and I gracelessly fell off the other side of my stool as my alcohol cloudy brain refused to let my reflexes catch me.

Mav reached out with lightning-fast arms and caught me, sliding me back onto my stool with his large hands on each side of my hips. “Fuck.” I groaned, holding my head.

“Are you drunk?” He snapped at me.

“And stupid.” I agreed. “Among other things.” As I refused to look up at him.

“Reid.” He snapped out, “I told you to leave her alone.”

I looked up at Reid who held his hands out in defeat, “I’m here with her sexy friend. Cora just couldn’t take no for an answer and tagged along annoyingly.” He winked at me, and I flipped him off.

“Oh no baby, don’t put me in the middle of all that, I’m more likely to fuck Cora before I’d fuck you, you’re too much of a man whore.” Nat quipped, letting the alcohol loosen her lips and I groaned.

“No one is fucking me.” I said to her, leveling her with my finger and what I hoped was a serious look.
