Which meant she was uncomfortable. She wasn’t the translator they had used last time, and neither was mine but where theirs was stiff and nervous looking, Cora was poised and confident. I admired the line of her spine where she sat in her chair as I took my seat at the head of the table next to her, aching to run my fingertips up the bumps of her spine under the sexy as hell dress she was wearing. I desperately wanted to tear it off of her and see exactly what her body looked like now, ten years after the last time I’d seen her naked.

Fuck.

“Alright, thank you for coming today to finalize the paperwork needed to transfer all of the properties and equities to us in exchange for the agreed upon amount of nine hundred million.” I said as I took my seat.

Shen Hu himself nodded and then spoke and his translator replied. “We look forward to finalizing this deal and building a relationship with Jones Holding.”

I nodded my head and Dexter started handing out the packets of paperwork to sign and started going over the numbers and conditions. Shen Hu’s right-hand man kept checking his phone, which made me uncomfortable and left me feeling slighted. What else was more important than making the deal to save his leader’s ass?

I sat back in my seat while I watched their interactions and couldn’t help but notice the still shifty eyes of the translator, she wouldn’t meet my gaze but every time she translated something she looked to Cora.

Cora was looking at her tablet and taking notes, not looking down the table at all, but she was paying attention, I could tell.

I grabbed her note pad and pen and wrote a note on it, before passing it back to her.

The translator is nervous.

She read the note and wrote back to me. Reid and Dexter were at the other end of the table dealing with the paperwork, but I caught how Dexter looked back at us with question in his eyes.

Cora pushed the pad back to me with her response written underneath mine.

She should be. They’re lying through their teeth. You’re about to get fucked.

She turned her tablet to me and showed me the screen she had pulled up. It was the stock rate for the company I was about to buy. And in the last five minutes, it had dropped an obscene amount of points in the market, and every minute longer that went by, it dropped even more.

She took the pad back and wrote on it.

They sold their stocks and tanked the company you’re paying almost a billion dollars for.

“Take that paperwork!” I bellowed out as I rose, while Reid and Dexter instantly grabbed the packets that our sneaky partners had been signing.

“What’s up?” Reid asked walking down to our end of the table.

“They tanked it five minutes ago.” I said, grabbing the papers from him and Dexter and then ripping them up as anger vibrated through my body. “Do you think I’m stupid enough to fall for a stupid insider trading scheme?”

Shen Hu stood up and started yelling at me in Mandarin and his translator looked at the floor, unwilling to translate what he said.

I looked at Cora and she raised her eyebrow at me, “Well let’s just say they didn’t teach us those swear words in eleventh grade Mandarin. But he’s telling you where to shove your pompous ass.”

I grabbed the phone from the table and dialed Veronica. “Get security in here now! The Shen Hu firm is to be thrown out on their asses and then clear the rest of my afternoon. We’re taking them for insider trading.” I slammed the phone back down and leveled a stare at the man that just tried to best me. “By the end of the day I will have destroyed every single thing you’ve ever touched. Every business, every venture, every person. Mark my fucking word!”

He started yelling again and angrily came down the side of the table on Cora’s side and I grabbed her chair and pulled her behind me as I squared up with the tiny man. Security ran in and grabbed him and his team before he could do something he regrated, pulling them all screaming and yelling from the conference room and out of my office before any actual punches were thrown, but I had barely restrained myself.

A billion dollars’ worth of punches.

“How the fuck did you catch that?” Reid asked, looking at Cora where she still sat in her chair, looking a bit shaken she but squared her shoulders and answered him.

“Their translator was only translating parts of what they said as you explained the paperwork. She assured them that you were buying it at one point and I just… trusted my gut I guess.”

She looked up at me and I fought the rage that boiled inside of me, letting her quiet demeanor calm me like she always did. “You just saved me from making a giant mistake and looking like a fool.”

She smirked a small smile at me, “Just doing as I was told to do.”

Dexter shook his head and picked up the paperwork, “Give this girl a raise and promote her to COO immediately.” He said as he picked up his cellphone and called his team. “We’re filing insider trading charges against Shen Hu’s firm immediately. Get the ball rolling, Jones wants him destroyed by dinner time.” He hung up and reached his hand out for Cora to shake and she tentatively took it, “That was an invaluable catch Ms. Valentine. I think you’re going to be a great asset here.”

“Oh I don’t work here. I work downstairs, I’m just filling in.” She said with a soft blush to her cheeks at his complement. I hated how that blush wanted to warm up my frozen heart.

“Not anymore you don’t. You work up here now.” I said, surprising myself. I picked up the phone again to Veronica and barked out more orders. “Get Sebastian in here now, we’re hiring Ms. Valentine full time.”
