I nodded again. “I did.” The words were hard and rough.

“Good.” She lowered her chin, her amber eyes fierce and burning with fury. “I hope that inbred SOB dies a slow, agonizing death.”

“There’s no coming back from...” I shuddered at the memory—the damage I’d done—how I’d left him. A strangled giggle leaked out of me—a mix of‘you wouldn’t believe what I did’and‘you know what I can do. Use your imagination.’

She nodded. “Yeah, I bet. By the way, I freaking love your hair.” Jessy grinned as she flipped my long bangs back. “And you got yourself some ink, I see.” She took my hand and slid the sleeve of my robe up to my elbow. “Damn, Des, I’ve never seen a full-on white tattoo. This is freaking gorgeous.” She brushed her fingers over the two names inked into my skin.

“Deck says it makes me look like a whore.”

Jessy rolled her eyes. “Well, your brother is a dick. Ignore him.” She stepped back and let my robe sleeve fall back into place. “When you called and told me what an utterly narcissistic, dick-waving, douchebag Tillman had been to you, I so wished karma would bite him hard in the ass. But, you know, I never wished him dead.”

Death was a harsh punishment even after all Till had done.

The rumbling sound of several truck engines and the crunch of packed snow beneath tire chains shattered our moment.

Jessy sighed, then gave me a weak smile. “Go on. Luisa and I are here to sit with the twins, so you can be with your pack.”

I closed my eyes and sighed. Time to say goodbye.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“Des, darlin’, the lastthing I want for you is the memory of seeing me and Sky and the other males doin’ what we gotta do.” Seff took my hand. “Look at me.”

I couldn’t. If I did, he would take one look and see deep down into my soul. He’d see my pain. My sorrow. My weakness.

He would also see my wolf’s heart, so full of rage I could barely contain it.

I’d said my goodbyes. I’d touched the faces of my fallen pack-mates and whispered my prayers to the ancient gods before pulling a blanket up over each of their lifeless bodies.

And Tillman. I’d whispered different words to him—words of truth rather than prayers.

I lied for you. Lied to my family. Lied to my pack. I lied to your parents, and they knew.

Alphas always knew.

I didn’t know if I would ever forgive him, but, for my sake, and for Seff, I’d try.

“Des, please look at me.”

“I trust you, Seff.” I swallowed, trying to relieve some of the tightness in my throat. “I trust you and these other males will do what needs to be done. I’m sure you will handle my pack-mates with all the honor and respect each deserves.”

The tears I’d held in welled up and leaked down my cheeks. I leaned my forehead against Seff’s shoulder, hoping to hide the fact I was losing my grip on all the emotions swirling like a storm inside me. I just breathed. Breathed in mysakana’scalming scent. Seff wrapped his arms around me as I sighed.

“I’ll get through this grief. I promise. But right now...I just need a moment.”
