I pulled Seff to a stop and whispered, “This is the way it’s going to be.”

“How what’s gonna be?”

“If there is any way I can adopt Arteisma and Nereida, I will do it. If you really want me...want to be with me, you’ll accept all of us. Readymade family. It’s not going to be easy.”

“Already gone through my mind, darlin’.” He raised my hand to his mouth and kissed it. I’d become so accustomed to my hand in his I hadn’t even realized he was holding it. “I know what I’m getting into, trust me.”

“You never trusted me.”

He is not Tillman.

I gazed up at Seff, pleading with my eyes, hoping, praying he understood how hard it was for me to give another male my trust. He pulled me into his arms.

“Darlin’, I told you, whatever you need to do to keep those sweet little females with you, I’ll be right there beside you. I promise.”

Decker scoffed from a few feet away. “What’s all this cowboy ‘darlin’’ shit?” His face was red and blotchy, with purplish bruises forming where Seff had obviously struck him.

“You act like Texas has a corner on cowboys and horses, Deck.” Seff laughed. “Look around you. You grew up in freaking Montana, asshat.”

Seff led me down the stairs to where the twins waited, accompanied by two white wolves—my parents.

“Here, help me pull this off.” I pointed to my truck, grabbed a corner of the thick quilted tarp, and waited until Seff was set, then flipped the snow-dusted tarp back.

“Holy sh—I mean holy smokes,” Seff said in awe as he walked around the big four-door truck I practically needed a stepladder to get into. “This isyourtruck?”

I folded the tarp and shoved it inside a box near my truck. “Yes.”

It was big and beautiful and the first vehicle I’d ever bought that wasn’t also owned by the pack.

Seff opened a back door, lifted the twins up, one in each arm, and set them inside. My parents jumped in and lay on the floor at their feet.

He came around to my door. “Did you pick this out?”

“Yes, and paid for it with my own money.”

“Nice.” He bent to whisper in my ear. “You owning a truck like this, I’m kinda turned on.”

I grinned up at him. “Is that going to hamper your ability to drive?”

His brown eyes sparkled as he smiled back. “No way!” He quickly pulled me around to the passenger side as if he were afraid I might change my mind.

“You can drive a stick, right?”

“Female, get your sweet hind-end in the truck and stop insulting me.”

He opened the door, wrapped his hands around my waist, and lifted me into the cab as though I weighed not much more than either of the twins.

My fun bantering mood instantly faded at the sight of Nereida’s face. She stared out at the snow with eyes that seemed to have lost all life. I reached back and patted her leg.

“You okay?”

She gave me a distracted nod.

“This pack is our family, and these are our secrets to keep. Everything’s going to work out.” I gave Nereida’s knee a gentle squeeze. “I promise.”
