“I agree,” Dain replied.

“And why the hell they let her go on her own is beyond me,” Jessy added from the background. “She just walked right off with them, and no one saw a thing.”

“Even the elder of Viveca’s own line forbade her to adopt them. He said—”

“Einar Ulven is there?” I blurted out as I jumped from my seat.

“Yeah, he was. He took off after her the minute we found out the twins were gone,” Dain replied.

Their great-grandfather many times over—the male whose decision created the mess—was already out looking for them. He’d never come up the mountain to see them. I couldn’t believe he cared anything about them at all.

Still trembling, I asked, “How long have they been gone?”

“We’re not sure when they left,” Dain answered. “We’ve been searching for three hours.”

My daughters have been missing for over three hours! Out in the cold with a desperate female!

Fire swept through me, boiling the blood in my veins. A strange darkness came over me, wild and hungry. My fangs erupted from my gums as my entire body shook with the need to shred something, tear into flesh, sink my teeth into muscle and bone, and taste blood on my tongue.

I’m going to fucking kill Viveca.

It took everything in me to not shift into my Breeder form and crash through the walls to hunt down the bitch who’d taken my daughters!

Seff’s hand slipped around the back of my neck. I looked up to see his long shaggy hair spilling over his shoulders, determination burning hot in his dark eyes.

“Listen, Dain, we’ll get a flight out of here to somewhere near Aneta as soon as we can. I’ll find them.”

“Yeah, Seff, you may be the only one who can. And Desarae, we are so damn sorry.”

“This is not your fault,” I said through clenched teeth. “Viveca knew what she was doing was wrong.”

“We’ll keep looking, Des,” Jessy said into the phone.

The little beep ending the call sounded like the sad toll of a tower bell in my head.

“Darlin’.” Seff’s brows formed two deep creases in his forehead. “I hate to say this, but the anger you’re feelin’...you gotta let it go.”

His hands cradled my face as he dipped down to kiss me, the sweet pressure of his soft lips gently defusing my seething emotions.

“I love you, Desarae,” he murmured against my mouth. “And I love those two little females. We will find them.”

I knew he loved me, but hearing he loved the twins...dear gods. Those words were the most precious promise he could have ever given me. Tears burned my eyes and threatened to spill out with every shaking breath I took. If I started crying, I might never stop until I held Nereida and Arteisma in my arms.

Seff backed me up until I hit the bed with my bare legs.

“Sit.”

I resisted until he gave me a slight push. Giving in with a sigh, I sat on the edge of the bed. Nausea nearly overwhelming.

His face came into view as he crouched in front of me. With a gentle tug, he pulled the phone from my grip.

“I’m gonna run out and grab your clothes from Brenin’s car.” He ran his thumb over my bottom lip first and then over my top lip. “You need to get ready, darlin’. And we need to talk to Gunner, tell him what’s going on.” Solid determination flowed through him. He would never give up until he found the twins...our daughters.

Seff led me down ahallway through the big house to his uncle’s office. From the little I saw, the place looked like a rustic, Southwestern-style cabin complete with wooden-beam ceilings, rock walls, and weathered wood everywhere. Thoughcabinwasn’t the correct word to describe the sheer size of the house.

Gunner’s office was furnished with leather furniture, all arranged around an enormous mahogany desk. Row upon row of books lined the bookshelves covering the entire wall behind the desk. Gunner had just come from a shower. His silvery hair was still damp. He stood with his hands on his hips as Seff relayed our phone call with Jessy and Dain.
