He searches my face for a long moment, hardly daring to believe what I’ve just said.

“All right. Then it’s time we take Valentine down once and for all.”

A real smile breaks across his face for the first time since I’ve known him.

His eyes drop to meet mine, and the smile fades as a flame bursts to life in his eyes.

I open my mouth to protest, but he’s already pulled me to him. His mouth meeting mine with such fervent urgency that I can hardly resist, let alone think.

His arms wrap around me, one hand gliding up into the hair at the back of my head as he anchors me to his body. He shifts slightly, the crunch of glass beneath him snapping me back to focus as I’m suddenly reminded of the shards stuck in my own feet.

As if waiting for me to be reminded of this, pain shoots through me, and I’m force to push away from Luci.

“My feet. They’re full of glass.”

“Damn it,” he growls, pushing himself up onto his feet, as he keeps a careful hold on me. “I’m sorry, Evi. I wasn’t thinking. I mean, I was, but …”

He lets out an exasperated sigh as he moves to set me down on a nearby couch to examine my feet.

“This is going to hurt,” he says, reaching to pull out the first shard.

I wince, but I’m surprised that it doesn’t feel nearly as painful as I’d expected. My mind starts to wander as Luci works and my eyelids grow heavy.

“Luci?”

“Hmm,” he hums, glancing up at me.

“I-I think I’m dying.”

There’s a loud commotion from somewhere just outside the office as men shout and footsteps thunder up the stairs toward us.

“Freeze, police!” A young man’s voice shouts from the doorway just as my body goes limp.

“Where’s Evi?” I choke out as Valentine slams me back against the glass window overlooking the city in my office.

My eyes dart to Seven who still lies unconscious on the floor behind the couch after I’d dragged him back from the club. I’d only meant for him to be knocked out long enough for Valentine not to register his presence, but I must have miscalculated the power behind my hit.

“If she has any sense left in her, she’ll be ready and waiting for me in bed by the time my men and I are through with you,” my father spits. “But whether or not she does, I expect she’ll be carrying my child by morning.”

“Somehow, I seriously doubt that,” I scoff, as I try to slip my hand deeper into my pocket, feeling for the brass knuckles within.

“Why’s that?” Valentine asks, his fingernails digging into my neck.

“You can’t be so blind to not have realized she was on her period, and a bloody heavy one at that.”

“So?”

“You seriously think her body is in the most ideal state to conceive a child right now?”

Valentine’s lip curls up at this.

“It was a figure of speech, anyway. All you need to know is that she’ll be so full of me by the time you’ve regained consciousness that I’ll have ruined any chance you ever had with the girl.”

“So, you don’t plan to kill me then?”
