Damn it, she’s hurt.

I glance up at the chains around my wrists as my mind struggles to come up with some way to escape that I haven’t yet tried.

Of course, nothing comes to mind.

“Evi? Evi, I need you to open the door. I can’t help you from in here. Please, Evi stay with me!”

There’s a painful moment of silence before I hear Evi groan and then the shuffle of her feet as she drags herself up onto them.

She grunts, and I hear the squeal of metal as she strains to turn the wheel to open the door.

“It’s too heavy, Luci,” she gasps. “I don’t have the strength.”

“You do, Evi. Don’t give up.”

“I don’t.”

“Evi, you’re the strongest woman I’ve ever known. You can do this, I promise.”

Several minutes pass before I hear the complaint of the metal again. Evi cries out as she puts every last bit of her strength into opening the door.

I hardly dare to breathe until there’s a sudden pop as the door’s seal breaks, and Evi stumbles inside.

“I-I did it,” she says, collapsing to her hands in knees amidst the icy fog.

“You’re naked and bleeding. What the hell happened?!”

“It doesn’t matter,” she says through small gasps. “We need … to save … Dante. Seven. Valentine ... he’s gone.”

“Slow down,” I say, trying to make sense of what she’s saying. “Catch your breath.”

“There’s no time,” she says, slowly looking up at me as she lifts her hand out of the fog to hold out a small book toward me.

“Where did you get that?” I ask in shock.

“Dante.”

I shake my head in disbelief. I should have known he’d never actually destroy the diary.

“Have you read it?”

She nods, her eyes searching my face.

“Is it true?”

“Yes, Anna was my wife.”

“I mean, the other part. The bit about you being … vampires.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Evi asks, a spark of fire flickering back to life into her eyes.

“I couldn’t. Dante had to be the one to tell you, or you had to find out on your own.”

“You could have let me keep the diary. Back in the mansion.”

“No, I couldn’t have ... We couldn’t have.”
