She couldn’t break through. She wasn’t strong enough, and in the distance, Vlad was burning. She watched as flames caught along his shoulders, his arms, his head…his hands. His body staggered and dropped to his knees. His voice crying out, “Mina...Mina—

“Mina, wake up!” Vlad’s voice snapped, and she felt his cold hands on her shoulders shaking her back to consciousness.

Sitting up, she looked around wildly. Her eyes found his and she ran her hands over his chest, his face. Tears blurred her vision. “You…you were burning. You were burning.”

“I’m okay,” he said, catching her hands, holding them to his chest and cheek. “See I’m right here. I’m perfectly fine. Unharmed.”

“But…but, your face. You walked into the sun for me,” she said, brushing her thumb over his soft smooth skin.

He smiled lightly. “I’d do anything to keep you from suffering Mina. Anything. I hope one day you’ll come to realize that. Youare…safewith me.”

Every time he said those words it made it easier for her to believe him. Slipping her arms around him, she slid down onto the bed once more, forcing him to lay flat as she put her head on his chest. The cold of his skin radiated through the fabric of his shirt, and she relaxed.

She felt herself beginning to drift off again and whispered. “Thank you…for saving me.”
