“Then I guess I have no choice but to stay. Or we could go to my place.”

“Maybe tomorrow.” She faces the TV again.

“You’re coming over tomorrow?”

“I heard it’s supposed to be a lot cooler tomorrow. You said you get cold easily.”

“Uh, no, I never said that.”

She turns to me. “You’re from California. It’s a given.”

I reach over and take her hand. “So you’re coming over to keep me warm?”

“I have to. I don’t want you getting cold.”

“That means you’d be sleeping in the same bed as me.”

“Yep.” Her eyes are still on the TV.

“What about tonight?”

“What about it?”

“Where am I supposed to sleep? You got rid of the couch and I can’t sleep in this chair.”

“Sounds like there’s only one option.”

“Which is what?” I want her to say it. I don’t want to assume.

“You’ll sleep on the floor.”

I look at her, trying to see if she’s kidding. She seems serious.

“Why are you giving me that look?” she says. “I have blankets and pillows. It’s not like you’ll be directly on the floor.”

“IfI’msleeping there,you’resleeping there.”

“No way! I’m not sleeping on the floor.”

“Then how can I protect you? You said you have a fear of being alone when it’s raining. If I’m here and you’re in your room, you’re alone.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s true.”

I squeeze her hand. “So what’s it going to be? The floor or your bed?”

“The bed. I can’t sleep on the floor.”

“Maybe we should go in there now.”

“It’s just after eight. It’s too early.”

“Not really. You have to be up early for work tomorrow and I want to get an early start writing.”

She shakes her head. “I’m not tired yet.”

So I guess we’re just sleeping. I thought maybe she wanted more than that. She’s been flirting with me all night. In the kitchen, she kept purposely brushing her body against mine, and when I’d sneak a kiss, she’d keep it going, making me think it would lead somewhere. But then she’d stop.

“You look cold,” she says, getting up from her chair.
