“We’re friends but it might turn into more. I’m not sure yet.”

“You said he’s from California?”

“Yeah, so if we start something it won’t last.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t. I don’t want you getting hurt.”

“Getting hurt is part of life, Mom. You and I know that more than anyone.”

“I know, but I’d hate to see you get hurt by this boy. You’ve already been through so much.”

“So have you.”

“But I feel so much better now. Coming here was the right decision. I wasn’t sure at first but now I know this is just what I needed. Now I need to make sure you’re doing okay too.”

“I am. I have Nina and now I have Kyle. I don’t feel so alone here anymore.”

“That’s good, honey. Just be careful with this boy. Maybe just be friends with him.”

“Mom, I’ll be fine. You don’t have to worry.”

“I always worry about you. I’m your mom.”

“My mom, the famous artist.” I smile as I think about that. She sold two paintings in one night! I’m so proud of her. “You better get back to work.”

“Except it’s not work. It’s fun. I absolutely love what I’m doing.”

“That’s great, Mom. I’m really happy for you.”

“What are you doing tonight?”

“Staying in. Having dinner.”

“What about Nina? Is she coming over?”

“No, she has family dinner at her aunt’s house on Sundays. I’ll probably just watch some TV then go to bed. I’m tired.”

“Well, get some rest. We’ll talk soon.”

“Okay, bye.”

I go in my room and peel off my stinky garage clothes, then jump in the shower. When I get out I go to my dresser to find some clothes. I’m going for comfort tonight. I put on some gray drawstring shorts made of sweatshirt material and a loose white t-shirt.

Just as I’m finished dressing I hear a knock on the door. It’s still light outside so I shouldn’t be scared but living alone in the middle of nowhere I’m always worried when someone comes to the door.

Going over to my window, I peek out the side of the drapes but can’t see anyone. And I don’t see a car.

The knocking continues. “Sage?”

Is that Kyle’s voice? It kind of sounds like him.

“Who is it?” I call out from behind the door.

“It’s Kyle. Everything okay?”

“Yeah, just a minute.”

What is he doing here? He said he wasn’t coming over. I’m not dressed for company. I’m not even wearing a bra.
