“Think so?” He chuckles.

“Kyle.” I lean toward him and lower my voice. “Don’t provoke him. He’s drunk.”

Jesse sets his beer down on the table. “I’d be more than happy to beat the living shit out of you.” He leans his head to one side, then the other, and shakes his shoulders out. Kyle just stands there, a smug grin on his face.

“Hey!” Josh yells from behind Jesse.

“Stay out of it,” Jesse yells back. “You’re not on duty, shithead.”

Josh comes up beside Jesse. “Calling a cop a shithead isn’t the smartest idea.”

“You’re not a cop here. You can’t arrest me.”

“No, but there are plenty of people here that could.”

“All friends of mine. Friends who’d love to see me kick this guy’s ass.” Jesse sways side to side, like he’s trying to figure out the best angle to hit Kyle. But he can’t because I’m still standing between them.

“C’mon,” Josh says, gripping Jesse’s shoulder.

Josh yanks away from him. “Don’t fucking touch me.”

“Lance,” Josh yells, turning back and waving at Lance to come over. Lance is a local cop. He’s probably around thirty and friends with Jesse. Not best friends, but they play basketball together.

“Go ahead and call him over,” Jesse says. “He’d love to see this.” Jesse raises his fist. “Get out of the fucking way, Sage.”

Lance appears. “What’s the problem?”

Jesse answers. “Officer Dipshit here is trying to tell me what to do. Do me a favor and throw his ass out of here.”

“Jesse, you need to stop,” Lance says. “You want another arrest on your record?”

Another? He’s been arrested before? I didn’t know that. I’m surprised Nina didn’t tell me.

“You’d fucking arrest me for hitting this asshole?”

“He could charge you with assault. Is that what you want?”

“I don’t give a fuck. It’d be worth it if it got his ass out of town.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Kyle says, cool and collected, not at all intimidated by Jesse. “At least not until I’m ready.”

“Let’s go.” Lance pulls on Jesse’s arm.

Jesse turns and swings at Lance, hitting him right in the middle of his face. Lance falls to the ground.

“What the fuck?” Lance says.

“Okay, that’s it.” Josh comes up behind Jesse and wraps his arm around his chest, yanking him back. “You’re done.”

“Fuck off, asshole!” Jesse fights against Josh, kicking him while wrestling to get Josh’s arm off him. He manages to free himself, then whirls around and punches Josh.

“Jesse, stop it!” I go up to him and he whirls toward me. It’s like slow motion. I see Jesse’s arm rise up, ready to take a swing at anything and everything, which right now happens to be me. I’m right in the line of fire and just as I tense up to take the blow, Jesse drops to the ground. Like flat to the ground, landing so hard he’s knocked out.

“What just happened?”

I look and see Kyle beside me.

Josh is next to him staring down at Jesse. “Shit, where’d you learn that?”
