“I need you to go to New York with me next week. My mom bought us both a ticket. She doesn’t know we broke up. She sold another painting last week and was so excited that I didn’t want to tell her what happened with us. So she still doesn’t know. And now I have these two tickets and I really want you to go. I want you to meet my mom.”

He lets me go and turns around, rubbing his hand through his hair.

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t go.”

“Why?”

“I have to work. I’m so behind. Last week I wasn’t able to write and my editor emailed and said I owe him three chapters by the end of next week.”

“You have more than three chapters. You told me you’ve written five.”

He turns to face me. “Sage, I want to go. I just…I just can’t.”

“We won’t be gone long. It’s only for a few days.”

“It’s not a good time. I really do have to work.”

“Which you can do when we get back. This is really important to me, Kyle. I need you to go.”

He pauses. “I’m sorry, but I can’t.”

“And you’re blaming work, but that’s not the real reason, is it?”

He says nothing, which is all the answer I need.

“You should leave,” I say, not looking at him.

“Sage, I..” His head drops and he sighs.

“I can’t keep doing this, Kyle. I can’t be with you if you can’t be truthful with me.” I walk to the door. “You need to leave.”

He remains where he’s at, not saying anything.

There’s a knock on the door and I open it and see Josh standing there.

“Hey, Sage. Ready to go?”

“Not quite.”

Josh notices Kyle behind me. “What are you doing here?”

Nina told Josh that Kyle was just using me for a summer fling, which isn’t true, but Josh believed her so now he pretty much hates Kyle.

“He was just leaving,” I say to Josh.

“Good.” Josh waits for him to go but he doesn’t. “Your legs stop working or what?” he asks Kyle.

“I’m not done talking to Sage.”

“We’re done,” I tell him. “In more ways than one.”

“She told you to go,” Josh says when Kyle doesn’t move.

I look at Josh. “If Nina asked you to go to New York with her to meet her mom, would you go?”

“If her mom lived there, then yeah. Of course.”
