Ana didn’t realize that I wouldn’t have let any woman other than herself touch me as she had. She didn’t understand how bad I wanted to have her completely. I wanted to keep all those breathy moans of hers to myself like the greedy man I was.

“Owen trusted me to take care of you. I don’t think he had last night in mind when he made the request.”

I didn’t expect her to slap her hands down on the table. She looked even more upset than before.

“You and that damn promise,” she huffed out, “it’s been years Blaise. How much time has to pass before you realize that you don’t owe him anything? Between cock blocking his sister and tormenting his best friend, I think he would be rolling around in his grave.”

Instead of feeling embarrassed by her growing volume, I matched her scowl. “You don’t understand anything. You don’t know what happened between us, Ana–”

“I do, Blaise. I know what happened that day with Owen. They told me all about it when they came to my doorstep to break the news.” Her voice grew quiet as her expression softened. “They told me all about the man who stayed right by his side.”

I don’t think either of us planned on having this conversation at some random diner. No, I didn’t think I would ever have this conversation with her. I struggled to wrap my mind around every word she said. Her next words shook me the most.

“I don’t blame you. The both of you were just in the wrong spot at the wrong time. It’s not your fault.” She reached out to brush her fingertips against my whitening knuckles. When had I clenched my hands so tightly?

I felt like I was going to throw up. Without anything in my stomach, I knew I would just be reduced to dry heaving. That had to be better than being looked at with such a hopeful gaze. All this time, I felt like a waste. Undeserving to live the life I had miraculously survived. For a moment, she made the thoughts go quiet.

If only I wasn’t scared. Terrified that I’d hurt her down the line too. Accidentally slip up and lose her to something I couldn’t control.

Pulling away from her hand, I slid away from the seat. “Bathroom,” I mumbled. My stomach was already doing me a favor. I was not normally one to run away, but with the curling of my insides, I didn’t have enough time to slow down.

Ana would realize soon enough. I wasn’t worth a second of her time.
