“He works in accounting, but he’s actually thinking about going into Human Resources.”

My heart stops. My face goes red, and I pray he doesn’t see it. I remind myself to breathe, though I have to force it. “What’s his name?”

“His name is Eric,” John says slowly, furrowing his brows at me. He knows. He knows that I’m hiding something. He turnshis head to one side, trying to read my fake smile that I’ve somehowmanaged to keep on my face. “Do you know him?”

Quicker than I intend, the words fall out of my mouth. “You know what, I think he has been in here in the past week or so. I don’t think we got a chance to talk or anything. But I believe I’ve seen him. I didn’t know he was your son.”

John begins to stand up and walk over to my desk. I shift inmy office chair. I can’t let him know that we’re on to them. I knowthat Eric was the guy who always pulled Peter aside to talk aboutsomething I couldn’t know about. It was strange, but even strangerwas that he’d recently asked for a transfer to the human resources department, even with a degree in accounting. Even though everyone he’s worked with has said he’s great at what he does.

I don’t know what Eric has to do with all of this, but if his father is the one dealing with the Carter, something bad is going on. They’re all involved somehow. And I can’t let him know that we know that. I can’t tell him that we’ve been gaining on them. At least we have an answer to one question.

Why was Eric involved with any of this? Because his father is. And he’s standing in front of me at my desk. He’s looking down on me with questioning eyes, with anxious energy. “What do you know about Eric?”

My mouth opens, but it’s so dry I can’t get any words out. What do I say? What can I do that will get John off of my trail? He knows something is wrong. He knows that I have information. My breath gets quick and suddenly I’m out of it. I look around for something that could help me give him an answer. But nothing is coming to my mind. I only see Eric, talking to Peter in the corner of a bar. Whispering to him. Staring at me.

“Hey, John. Sorry it took me so long. Are you ready?” Chris asks from the doorway.
