Ali huffed leaving the bathroom slowly. “You need to stay off WebMD. I’ll be fine at home. Besides, work is ten minutes away. And you work, too.” She reminded Bobbi.

“I’ve moved all my client meetings. Plus, Nana is there if I need to step out.”

She loved her grandmother, but Celeste spent most of her afternoons drinking a cocktail and watching Days of Our Lives. Ali didn’t see how she would be useful babysitting her, let alone in an emergency. “Don’t you have anything to say about this?” she asked Cornell.

He glanced over at Bobbi, pocketing his hands in defeat. “Why don’t we just try it for a few days at least? I’ll stay there and—”

“And drive back and forth every day? I’ve done that before, and it’s not fun.” She sighed.

“Nonnegotiable,” Bobbi said with her hands on her hips. “Until your headache is gone, and you are more on your feet, you’re coming home where someone is with you all the time. I’m going to check on your discharge papers and the neurologist referral.”

When Bobbi left the room, Ali shuffled over to the couch. “You should’ve backed me up, traitor.”

He smirked. “You know your mom still scares me. And she’s right. At least for the first week, you’ll need someone with you. If I run to practice, Mowgli won’t be much help. And my dad is flying out soon.”

Ali nodded, not having enough energy to object. “Just stay tonight with me, okay? I… I feel out of it.” She frowned at the fogginess clouding her mind, at the foreignness of her body. “I know I’ll feel better if you run interference with my mom, so she lets me rest.”

Cornell smiled. “I can do that.”

“And Nana,” Ali added. After her, no one loved Cornell more.

“I’ll help you down to your mom’s car, then run home and get some stuff so I can go straight to work in the morning. I called the lot where your car is, so I’ll swing by to see if your phone is there.”

The paramedics had taken her wallet from the car, but nothing else. She looked up at him. “Maybe you should just stay home. I feel bad taking you from your dad.”

“Don’t. He won’t appreciate my sexy nurse outfit the way I know you will,” Cornell quirked.

Ali chuckled before stopping, clutching her side. “Don’t make me laugh.”

Cornell sat beside her, pressing his lips to her ear. “I promise, when you feel better, I’ll wear it, and you won’t be laughing.”
