Ali narrowed her eyes and twirled her glass. “What’s happening later?”

“How do you feel,” he began, leaning closer to her. “About a little staycation?”

“What?”

Cornell smiled cautiously. “I got us a room for the night.”

Ali’s eyes widened. “Here?” she asked. The Omni was one of the fanciest hotels in Dallas. One night might cost as much as they paid in rent on their house. “Are you crazy?”

“About you, yeah.” Cornell winked and tucked a piece of hair that had slipped from her updo. “Come on, it’s not every day I’m in a monkey suit and you’re walking around in this.” His hand moved to rest on her leg beneath the table, palm covering the velvet fabric, fingertips skimming the bare skin the slit allowed for. “What do you say? You, me, Jacuzzi tub, and thirty-dollar cheeseburgers?

Ali took a deep breath. What did he say earlier this morning? A day for facing his fears?

Tonight was the night, and suddenly Ali felt nervous in a way she hadn’t since the actual first time when she was waiting for Cornell to leave the stadium and meet her in the field house over a year ago. There was a swirl of movement in her stomach, small little twitches and vibrating flaps.

There they were—lightning bugs.

“What about Mowgli?”

“Jasper took him for the night.”

Her cheeks burned. “I didn’t bring anything.”

“Three words.” Cornell turned his head to whisper in her ear under the guise of glancing over his shoulder at the stage. His voice tickled her bare skin, sending a thrilling chill across her body. “Big fluffy bathrobe.”
