He glanced at me as he straightened up. “Your car’s dead, all right,” he said. “And it won’t be working any time soon. If I didn’t know any better, I would say it was sabotaged.”

“That’s impossible,” I said. “It never left my parents’ garage. We have a lot of security so even if someone wanted to sabotage it, they would never be able to get in.” I should know how tight the security was. I tried and failed to circumvent it many times as a kid until my mom threatened to only feed me salad and protein shakes until college. I believed her, too. A skinny daughter looked better for the cameras.

The biker shrugged. “I believe you, but that’s what it looks like.”

I sighed. “Well, thank you. I don’t suppose I can borrow your phone? I don’t have any reception.”

The corners of his mouth lifted slightly. “You’re not going to find reception for at least ten miles.”

“Oh.” I bit my lip. “That’s okay. Thank you. Is there a gas station nearby?”

He nodded. “Hop on. I’ll give you a ride.”

“No, I don’t want to trouble you further. You’ve already been really nice and I could use the exercise anyway.”

“This road is dangerous,” he said. “It’s not a good idea for you to be out in the open like this.”

I felt doubtful that this guy was just Prince Charming on a mission to protect damsels in distress. “No offense, but how do I know you’re not the one making the road dangerous?”

“Because if I had any plan to kidnap you or hurt you, I would have done so by now.”

A shiver ran down my spine as I realized how true that was. “Okay,” I said. “I would love it if you could drive me to the nearest gas station. Thank you. I’m Addie, by the way.”

“Luke.” He held out his helmet to me. “Put this on. It’ll keep you safe.
