“Has he said anything to you?”

He seems thoughtful for a moment. “No. But I’m being moved from the stables as we speak.”

“Where is he sending you?”

“To a house outside the borders of Villanueva.”

“We have to run away. Tonight!” I add urgently.

“I’ve already told you, I have nothing to offer you. I doubt Fernando would just let us go. We’d end up on the run with no money or food and your father hunting us down.”

“Then we’ll go far,” I say. “I have friends in the States.”

“Sonia, I can’t cross the border. We’d need a coyote for that. Do you know how much they charge?”

“I have enough to get us to the border. We’ll settle there and work until we have enough to get us across.”

His gaze pierces mine, forming a connection in which I can see all the thoughts rushing through his mind. If he leaves with me, he’ll lose his chance of ever getting his land back. But if he doesn’t, he’ll lose me.

After what seems like an eternity, he gives me a short nod. “How closely are you being guarded at night?”

“Very,” I admit sadly. “There’s a man posted right outside my window. But…” I smile evilly as I consider how my father assumes that’s the only way to leave a house. “There are plenty of other ways.”

“Good. There’s a bus that leaves for Chihuahua every night. I’ll buy the tickets. Meet me at the station at midnight.”

“I will,” I say, my heart already racing in my chest as adrenaline pumps through my veins.

“This is insane,” he murmurs against my hair.

“Isn’t that what love is supposed to be?”

“If it’s real.” He wraps his arms around me, bringing me in for a kiss that leaves me breathless. When we pull away, he’s tense, with a deep frown between his brows. There’s love in his eyes, but there’s something else too. Something that worries me because I can’t read it, giving me a sense of unease I can’t shake off.

He loves me, I remind myself. He loves me.
