CHAPTER NINE

SONIA

Ten Years Ago…

You know where I am. If you want it, come and take it.

There was no need to ask what Santos meant byit. We both knew exactly whatitwas.

For a whole week, I’ve told myself I didn’t wantit.Itholds no interest for me. Why would I wantitfrom a stranger? A man I haven’t seen since then—not in the fields, not in the stables. Nowhere. What kind of job does he have that he’s never around during the day? Does he even work for my father at all?

Not that I’ve been looking for him. Of course not. I’m too busy with life.

If I wantedit, all I’d have to do is seek Diego out. Except that when I did two days ago, he didn’t have what I was looking for.

Now here I am, lying in the dark, unable to sleep because all I can think about is theitthat Santos teased me with.

If you want it, come and take it.

I shut my eyes tight and my mind is filled with the image of him dropping to a crouch in front of me. Of his face pressed between my legs.

Heat and wetness pool in my core and I have to force myself to calm my breathing out of fear that Amelia might wake up. Slowly, I bring my hand over my breasts, imagining it’s his, then I move it further down to my sex. But even when I’m able to bring myself to orgasm, I’m not fulfilled.

Enough is enough.

I push the blankets off me, and after I put on my soft white slippers, I make my way to the window and peer out into the night, making sure none of the guards are around. As quietly as possible, I flip the lock and open it.

“Soni?” I turn to see my sister sitting up, looking my way. “Where are you going?”

“I… I’m going to see Luna.”

“Why? You don’t have to sneak around anymore. You can see her during the day.”

For a moment, I consider telling her what I’m really planning, but something tells me that even someone as sexually adventurous as her wouldn’t approve. “I just need a ride, okay?” Well, that’s sort of true. “I won’t be long. Go back to sleep.”

She seems to accept my response. “All right. Be careful.”

Taking my usual route to the stables, I move quickly. All the while, my heart pounds furiously in my chest, and it’s not the running that has me like this. It’s the anticipation of something I’ve been obsessing over for seven days.

When I finally reach my destination, I slip inside. The quiet whinnying and shifting of the horses in their stalls muffles the sound of my steps.

I go to the back, where a narrow curved staircase leads to the second-floor apartment. Everything is dark, much more so than downstairs, and I have to feel my way to the door I know will be there.

Turning the knob, I open it and slip inside the dimly illuminated room, then shut it behind me. I glance around, taking in the small space that holds only a dresser and a full-size bed. The flannel sheets are mussed, as if someone was just sleeping there.

My eyes follow the light and steam that’s spilling from a partly open door that I imagine is the bathroom. Swallowing hard, I go to it and push.

“San—” My greeting is cut short as I’m grabbed from behind and slammed against the wall. I wrap one hand around the thick arm that’s braced against my chest and the other on the one holding a long, sharp knife against my throat. “Santos,” I gasp, afraid to move an inch.

His gaze is as sharp as the blade, cutting into me intensely. Then, as recognition sets in, it softens, and he instantly releases me.

I want to take the time to admire him, the way water drips from his black hair onto the expanse of wet skin that’s covered in nothing but a towel that’s barely clinging to his hips. But it’s difficult to do with him still grasping that knife tightly. He remains standing where he is, staring at me, seeming almost angry as he grinds his teeth. “Never walk into my room unannounced.”

“I’m sorry. I-I didn’t think.”

“Of course you didn’t, princess. You’re not used to having to think about anything but what you’re going to fucking wear.”

My blood boils in anger at his insult. “You’re right. I’m not capable of thinking for myself, which is why I made the stupid mistake of coming here.”
