Ian set his fork down and tilted his head in thought. The longer the silence went on—and it felt like forever—the more nervous Sofia became. Just as she was about to rush into a speech, begging him to forget it, that it didn’t matter, he answered.

“Yes. And not only am I okay, I’m happy.”

The smile that took over his face was one of the most glorious sights she’d ever seen. She blinked.

“I love my son,” Ian continued.

“I know you do.”

“And I have no doubt I’ll love our child too.”

Sofia didn’t know if she reached for his hand or he hers, but somehow, their hands met and clasped, their meals abandoned and any thoughts of needing to get home forgotten. Ian moved her chair with his foot, turning her to get a better view out of the window, where the sun was rising on the new day.
