Stella snorted a laugh as Mercury chuckled softly.

Gemma frowned at them “Why are you two laughing at that? I’m, like, super nervous about it.”

“We’re from Oklahoma,” said Stella, as if that explained it.

Mercury added, “Winter in Oklahoma gives us a break from ticks, fleas, snakes, and tornadoes. In exchange, we are blessed with freezing rain and all-out ice storms. You learn to drive on roads that are, as my dad would say, “slick as snot,” or you stay home most of the winter.”

“Oh, good. That makes me feel better. You two don’t seem like the stay-at-home types,” said Gemma.

“Like I said before—you’re a smart kid,” said Stella. “Now, keep watch for any more green fog.”

“Or people. Living people,” Mercury said.

“I can see the fog in the side mirror,” Gemma said as she peered outside the truck. “It’s way back there now.”

“I’m not worried about that green fog,” said Stella.

“What? There’s going to be more?” Mercury stared at her best friend.

“Yep, Acorn. I think so. And I don’t think next time it’s going to be so easy to get rid of.”

Mercury blew out a long sigh. “Shit.”
