Ghost

“This is mother fucking bullshit! You can not tell me that there is nothing else you can fucking do! Remember I fucking know things. Have fucking done things for you and yours. Don’t you fucking dare say that. You’ll fucking keep looking!” I hiss into the phone, gripping the arm of my chair so tight that you can see the bones just under the skin.

“I completely understand your frustration. We are doing everything we can. Whoever did this knew what the fuck they were doing,” the man on the other end sighs.

“Find me something,” I demand before exploding and throwing my phone at the wall.

“That’s what… the fourth one this week?” I hear one of my best friends and business partner, Spook, say from the door.

“No, it's only the fourth this month! Now, do you want to tell me why you are standing in my office and not doing your job?” Turning to my computer system I start clicking through my email. Hoping that there would be something saying they found something. Nothing, fucking nothing.

Come on, Tiny, where the fuck are you? Give me something I know you can give me a sign.

“Hey, asshole, are you listening?” Spook glares.

“What?” I ask, turning back to him, “I thought you had gone to bug someone else.”

“I need you to look at the new cases and tell me what you think,” he says, handing me a stack of files.

I know I need to do this. Our business is everything since leaving the Navy SEALs. When my team did their last mission and Phantom, Troy, one of my best friends and my second in command when we were in the field, told us he was getting out to stay home with his wife and kids, we were all ready to be done with not being able to pick our own missions. Now that’s not a problem, we get to pick and choose what we do and where we go.

I look over the stack of files. Ranging from an overzealous mom who swears her child is missing to a woman trying to get her and her children out of a bad situation to people missing domestic and abroad.

Helping those who can’t help themselves is all I’ve ever wanted to do. Now I can on my terms and the way we want without so much of the red tape that comes from being in the SEALS.

I get to the fourth file and my stomach drops. The woman looks fucking familiar and the eyes of the baby she is holding, pulls at something in my memory.

“This one.” I toss the file across the desk.

“Why this one?” Spook questions, looking over the file.

“It’s the eyes. Something about that baby's eyes is pulling at a memory. I know in my gut that helping them is what we need to do.”

“Then this is the next one we focus on. What about the others?” he questions me.

I sort the files into three separate piles pointing at each when I’m done, “These two are overzealous parents. Have tec do a quick social media check and move one. These four are missing people. Let’s start our search for them and when we get leads one of us will follow up. This stack is people needing to escape. Let’s set up a meeting with the team and get them started putting together extraction plans.”

Spook shakes his head, smiling wide, “How do you do it? How do you know what you know by just looking at a file?”

“It’s a gift. What can I say?”

I look up at Spook and watch him, staring at the picture of the mother and child with his eyebrow drawn down in confusion. I know exactly what is going on in his head because it’s the same thing that was going on in mine. That woman and child are too familiar. I don’t know how or why but I know without a doubt helping them will be big. Right now my focus is on finding my woman making sure the mother fuckers that took her never breath again.

I get lost in my search for Tiny when Spook’s voice breaks through my thoughts, “I’m going to take on this one personally.”

“Sounds good, brother. I’m here if you need me.”

“Yeah, only if it’s life and death, right?” he chuckles, turning to go.

Not justifying his statement with a comment I just flip him the bird and continue my search. I don’t know how long I watch and rewatch the footage of the girls at the bar, looking for something I could have missed. Look in troughs for fucking anything.

“I don’t know where you are but I’m coming for you. No matter how long or how far I have to search, I will get you back. When I do, I won’t be letting go this time,” I growl, heading to the gym to try and clear my head.
