I wouldn’t be surprised if a few bystanders alerted security with the way she was hollering like I was dragging her down to the depths of hell.

“Addi, isn’t Colorado cold? I don’t have anything to wear.”

“I doubt that,” I said, eyeing her two large suitcases that were bursting at the seams. “But we can go shopping when we get there. Plus, it’s the middle of May, so it can’t be that cold.”

Maybe the promise of a shopping trip would put a little more pep in her step. I could already feel myself breaking out in a light sweat from the effort of trying to pull her along.

“My feet hurt,” she said. “You’re jogging. Slow down.”

Instead, I picked up the pace, determined not to let her high-pitched whining ruin my adrenaline high.

“Let’s go to Cancun instead. I want to show off this hot little bod.” Even while complaining, she took the time to give me a little shimmy. As entertaining as she was, I was out of patience. If we didn’t hurry, we weren’t going to have enough time to get our tickets and board the plane.

“You still haven’t told me what the hell is going on and why we’re taking this impromptu vacation. I’m happy you’re finally pulling that stick out of your ass and having some fun, but—”

That brought me to a screeching halt, and an “Oof” escaped her as she ran into the back of me. Turning quickly, I did my best to rein in my frustration. It wasn’t Olivia’s fault she was still in the dark.

“Do you remember Becky, my practically teenager neighbor that runs around in booty shorts and crop tops?” I paused while Olivia gave me a small nod. I’m sure the look on my face warned her from doing anything more. “I came home this morning to find her very enthusiastically sucking Ethan off on Vera.”

Olivia gasped.

“Now I can’t live in my condo anymore, I’m jobless because my father’s a dick, and I have to burn Vera. So that brings me here, trying to get on a flight to anywhere that will distract me from how screwed up my life is right now!”

The words had rushed out of me so quickly that I had to take a few deep breaths to calm my burning lungs. I swallowed the emotion clogging my throat and lowered my voice. “Please, Olivia. If ever there was a time I needed you to not give a shit, it’s now.”

“I’m so sorry, babe,” she said, drawing me in for a tight hug. “Let’s go.”

That’s how we got to be drunk on a plane—well, I am anyway—me spilling my guts about the day’s sordid events. I thought talking about it was going to be a lot harder than it ended up being. I mean, shouldn’t it be?

Shouldn’t I be heartbroken, bingeing on ice cream in my pajamas while Olivia dries my tears with a Louis Vuitton hankie? The errant thought causes a giggle to burst out of me.

None of that matters at this point anyway because soon we’ll be landing in Colorado, where I can give a big eff you to responsibility for a few days.

It takes us an hour to hunt down a place to stay, but we finally decide on a simple cabin an hour outside of a popular ski resort. It’s one of five three-bedroom cabins in the shape of a giant horseshoe, with not much more than a hundred feet between them.

A sense of peace comes over me when I see the pictures the renter posted. The cabins look remote and relaxing, exactly what I need to escape from the stress of my life back home.
