‘It’s not that bad.’

‘Nuh-uh, non-negotiable. Hate it.’

‘Because of the topic? Not shy, are you?’ Holly jibed, giving Jen’s thigh a squeeze.

Jen’s cheeks burned hotter than the sun. ‘It’s just not something I like talking about.’

‘You are shy,’ Holly said, her face suddenly sympathetic but her eyes saying she was weighing up whether to wind Jen up or not. ‘Consider the topic closed. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. But just to put my two cents into the ring: I think it’s totally normal. I did it this morning.’

If Jen’s cheeks were burning before, they were molten lava now. Thankfully some of the blood had been diverted south, or her cheeks might have actually caught fire.

She shot Holly a look that said ‘shut up’ in the nicest way possible. She might have said it to get a reaction. Or even worse, it might have been true. The thought of Holly touching herself mere hours ago sent Jen into a tizzy.

Holly held Jen’s gaze, her smouldering stare stoking the air between them.

Jen edged forward, Holly holding steady.

What was this? Jen’s heart picked up pace as her brain tried to decipher what the heck was happening. There was no air in the car, only silence as a thousand words went unsaid.

Holly’s phone vibrating in the cup holder made them both flinch.

Connection broken, the temperature in the car returned to normal. Life shifted back from slow motion to its usual pace, carrying on as if nothing ever happened. That was, apart from Jen’s heart. It pounded like she’d just jogged to the top of a skyscraper. Holly was a high she struggled to come down from.

‘Yeah? Uh-huh,’ Holly said, carrying on the one-sided conversation with her dad. ‘Right, okay. Sounds good. See you later.’ She hung up, replaced the phone in the holder, and turned to Jen. ‘He still can’t find any of these bloody cheese crackers.’

‘Shite. And what about this guy? Yay or nay?’ Jen replied, her voice surprisingly stable. She wanted to rewind and chuck the phone out the window before it had a chance to ring.

‘He’s told Dad it’s no longer needed, but he’ll still pay. I guess he didn’t need the hamper to kick off date night,’ she said with a smirk.

‘Home time then?’

‘Deffo. But, Dad says we can eat the hamper, like, if you fancy it? The fresh stuff would just need binned otherwise. Don’t want it to go to waste.’

Jen’s heart flipped with excitement. ‘Sounds good. Your place or mine?’
